any "pick your own fruit" ?
are there any "pick your own fruit" places in europe like we have here? Would especially like to know of a place to pick strawberries in the summer.
|
England in June. Very popular, and what's nicer than a freshly picked English strawberry and a glass of Pimms on a summer's day?

Isn't the web a marvelous thing? Here's a whole website dedicated to the subject in the UK:

www.pick-your-own.org.uk/strawberries.htm

All over the Black Forest, Bavaria - - and perhaps everywhere in Southern Germany - - there are U-pick strawberry places. The wonderful fragrance can be incredibly intense, just driving by with the windows open.

Thanks for the fond reminiscence.

Best wishes,

Rex
[email protected]

Plentyfull in Switzerland for strawberries and other red berries and later for cherries.
It's fun, especially for kids, and very popular, because pretty cheap compared to the prices you'd pay in the shop.
Hi,
In Norway in June/July there is a very large number of places you can pick your own strawberries. You would have no problems getting a "summerjob" on a farm as a strawberry picker or you can pick the amount you want for a small sum. The strawberries in Norway is also very good because of the longer growing season in Norway the berries are very sweet!!!
It is also possible to pick apples, pears, cherries and plums in August: http://www.hardangerfjord.com/eng/eng.htm

Howitzer - one of my favourite things in summer is to go and pick strawberries somewhere...

I assume you mean picking for personal consumption and not paid picking for the farmer?

There are places everywhere, certainly in SE England and the Midlands, where I've lived.

There is one on Gibbet Hill Road in Coventry, just near Warwick University campus, that I used to love.

Instead of trying to implement a rule not to eat when picking (because you haven't had those weighed and paid) they had an honesty box to pay for those you'd eaten whilst picking - so we just used to pick, eat and chat freely (pick one eat one pick one eat one) and then put the same into the honesty box as we paid for those we were taking away with us.

:)

Happy memories...

Cherries in the Netherlands, in the area called the Betuwe (around and south of Culemborg, Tiel, Arnhem). Other fruits as well, but cherries are the best!

A search on the internet helped me find more details of the fruit farm I referred to above:

Brook Farm
Stoneleigh Road
Gibbet Hill
COVENTRY, CV4 7AB
Contact: Mr R P Barnes
Tel: 024 7641 0292

Soft fruits, vegetables, salad etc.
Pick your own soft fruits,
vegetables

Other similar farms in the Warwickshire area can be found in the PDF file below. The link is quite slow to load but has a lot of information included.

http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/Web/corporate/pages.nsf/6cf1c8ffa4fdcd638025693500329f8a/55320d11bef88b6580256a7e002c6147/$FILE/food%20directory%202001.pdf
