Any non-uphill way to Montmartre?
 

On a previous trip (and I was 15 years younger!), we took a bus up to the region of Montmartre to see Sacre Coeur and had to walk it seemed like "miles" uphill. What would be the best way from the 7th arr. to get to Sacre Coeur without much uphill walking? Merci!

Unless you have figured out a way to walk down a hill while still going up I suggest you deserve a taxi at this point in your life.

Take a bus or Métro to Pigalle. Go to the bus stop on the east side of Place Pigalle. Get on the next Montmartrobus. Here's the schedule:

There's a funicular tram that runs up close to Sacre Coeur from the Abbesses metro stop, had you done that?

I forgot to mention, there's also a funicular that runs from the Anvers metro, but I don't find that a pleasant metro stop (at least, not last time I went there.)
I think there is also a Montmartre bus that runs from the Jules Joffrin metro stop.

I don't have the map to hand - I printed it out off the ratp site (see Robespierre's post), but - accompanied by a delightful elderly gentleman I met on the bus - we got off the Montmartrobus when it seemed like it had gone past Sacre Coeur, and we walked DOWN the hill. No problem.

As mentioned above, from the 7th, I forget which line to take, but you get off at the Abbesses metro stop, then walk east without really gaining or losing any elevation to the funicular, which takes you right up to Sacre Cour.

One hint: the metro station at Abbesses has an elevator. Use it. The stairs seem endless.

It is a shame, I found the walk up and down to be better than Sacre Coeur.

The Abesses station is way underground.

I second the Montmartrebus. You can take it to the end of the line, wait for it to be recharged and then get off at Sacre Coeur on the return. Very pleasant ride.

You can walk back (downhill) to Pigalle and the metro or walk to Abesses and take the stairs down to the train.

A few years ago, I took the Metro to the Chateau Rouge stop and followed a delightful walk from a "Paris Walks" book I have. This walk was around the area in back of the Sacre Coeur, with some parts a little hilly, but not bad, and then down to the Sacre Coeur. This way was interesting and fun.

There are small city buses that will take you directly to the top of the butte. There are winding streets to the west of the butte that will gradually lead you up there. There's a funicular at the base of the butte that will take you most of the way up (but not all the way).

From the 7th (let me guess—rue Cler?), you can take line 13 or lines 6/2 of the Métro to get up to the Pigalle area. Line 2 will take you directly to Anvers, which is near the base of the butte.

You cannot completely avoid walking up or down in Montmartre, or even in any other part of Paris. Even the Champs-Élysées is on a slight incline (with the high point at the Arc de Triomphe).
