Any nice little towns to visit near Besancon?
Hi,
I will be around Besancon and wonder if there any places worth visiting (excluding Dijon). I'd love to see Colmar as I saw many lovely photos but wonder if it's out of the way.
Coming from Annecy, I will have two spare days as below. Thanks.
Day 1 (coming from Annecy) where to visit/stay/do?
Day 2 ??
Day 3 need to arrive in Besancon in the afternoon (visit family)
Day 4 Besancon
Day 5 Besancon
Day 6 Dijon
Day 7 Dijon

Will you travel by car or by public transport?
Colmar is 1 1/2 hrs by train from Besancon.
It's also possible to go first from Annecy to Colmar ant then to Besancon.
Places to visit in the area (in addition to the Salines royales):
Mulhouse
Ecomusee d'Alsace
Church of Ronchamps (Le Corbusier)
Caves of Reclere
Watch museums of Le Locle and La Chaux-de-Fonds
Underground mills of Le Locle
Caves of Vallorbe
Mecanical music museums Reuge and Baud at Ste-Croix and l'Auberson
Fortress of Pontarlier
Lakes of Brenets, St-Point and Joux
Saut du Doubs (Doubs waterfalls)

We spent 3 weeks in the Doubes & Jura about 6 years ago. The area is more noted for its geography than any "cute little villages".
I would probably stop at Lons le Saunier and also visit the nearby Baume le Messiers in a canyon, and also Cirque de Baume. Farther down the A39, stop at Arbois for a quick visit - although it would not make my "top 50" list of villages in France. Dole might be another stop. We visited it, but I don't recall much about it. I'll have to check our photos to refresh myself.
We have visited Besancon on three different occasions - a hidden gem. Don't forget the Vauban stuff & the zoo.

What time of the year will this trip take place?
Look at the Jura mountains - there are watchmaking exhibits and museums, horse-centric activities, dog-sled racing days, all manner of hiking and biking and even skiing opportunities, specialty cheeses ("Tête de Moine" for one), wellness places - lots to figure out and do.

"I will be travelling in early May and would like to rather visit France parts (and avoid Switzerland)"
For people like me living in the greater area, the Jura is a whole and we don't pay any attention to the border. Some places (like Saut du Doubs) are even on both sides of the border, others (like Reclere caves or Underground mills) are properly at the border.
But with a good geographical kowledge, it's perfectly possible to stay only in the French part of the Jura. About 50 per cent of the places I mentioned are in France, BTW.
Have a nice trip!

I'd walk or ride along the route of the TransJurian ski de fond course, there you will find lovely meadows alive with wild flowers and eat Franch Comte cheese. But it needs you to follow the Doubs up into the hill towards and beyond Pontarlier
