Any New Year's Resolutions for Travel in '01?
Happy 2001 everyone. It would be interesting to hear what you resolve for the upcoming year of travel. I intend to take a river cruise through eastern Europe, something I've been putting off for a long time.

Lola - Happy 2001 back at you. Which river cruise are you looking at? Have you talked (cyber or otherwise) with anyone who has done one? I have tried different forums for advice but no real luck except one response. We are going a GCT on the Rhone in March so I will have some first hand info for you.

Simple: more travel, more travel, more travel! I'll be doing Rome and Tunisia in late Jan/early Feb., and then a week in Paris in early April thanks to the best deal ever on Icelandair. I'd like to work in a major "expedition" trip (Europe is starting to seem not so far away the more often I go there!) either to Australia or on an African safari in the fall. And I'd like to spend New Year's Eve 2001 someplace *other* than my home of DC...maybe Venice.

European travel is not really something I have to resolve to do, it's what I will look forward to all year. But my plan is to return to France next year and spend time in the countryside, haven't decided exactly where yet. My real travel "resolution" for 2001, is to take advantage of all the day and weekend trips closer to home. I live in Long Island, New York, and there is so much in this part of the country of historical and cultural interest, but I never take the time to explore any of it. Though I've visited France, Spain, Morocco, England and Ireland, and plan to keep going until I've seen all of Europe, I've never spent any time in New England except for one weekend in Boston several years ago. I've never even taken the ferry across the sound to Connecticut. That's my resolution.

Wishes for a prosperous and happy New Year to all travellers! My resolution is to improve my Spanish. I'm spending a week in Mazatlan, Mexico with my family during the kid's school holidays. In December of next year and then again during Holy Week of 2002 I'm going to Andalusia. (I would also love to "resolve" to take a tour of Central Mexico: San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, the Monach Butterfly Sanctuary in the mountains of Michoacan or the Day of the Dead celebation in Oaxaca.) There. Don't you feel better now knowing what my plans are?
I enjoy reading here at Fodors all the ins and outs of European destinations I won't get to this year but resolve to do so during my life.

Annette, I'd really recommend San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato in Mexico. So many people feel that if it's not Europe, it's $#%&%. Central Mexico is wonderful. We're actually going to the butterfly sanctuary in early March - I'm very excited about it! I've been wanting to see that area for a long time.
I like what Ess said - to take advantage of the travel opportunities close to home. One of the recent threads dealt with what you could see from your window. Lots of people live in great areas! I live in Toronto - there are lots of places either a short flight or drive away.
This year I will get an extra week of vacation. I normally have 5 weeks but because I've got 25 years of service with my company come October (actually the company has been sold a few times, but I've been with them through it all), I'm getting a 6th week of vacation for this year only. I also turn 50 this summer. I think those are signs that I should plan something wonderful and not waste it! You can bet I'll be doing lots of reading - and dreaming - the next few months.
Happy travels in 2001.

For 2001, I want to increase my fluency in Italian, French, German and Spanish, so that I can start looking for a job that involves travel! My husband and I are going to NYC and Boston this spring to visit relatives, and we are going to be saving up for our next trip to Paris and London... Happy trails to all!

Hi! I have a New Year's Resolution(or two) regarding traveling abroad. My husband and I have only been to Europe one and visited Ireland. My husband does not enjoy touring or visiting museums or historical sights or any tourist attractions. We basicallyrented a car in Ireland and traveled to differnt areas in Ireland on a golf vacation. This is fine and I enjoya relaxing game of golf but like to see things as well. My husband is very limited and has only 2 weeks vacation a year. in his mind, these 2 weeks should be spent relaxing not touring. Believe me I had a hard enough time getting hime to go to Ireland. we usually end up on a cruise, going to Hawaii, or somewhere exotic in the carribean. my resolution is to start taking vacations alone and venturing out by myself as i have more vacation time (over 3 weeks)! I hope to really experience and tour Europe in my time. (I'll also spend some of the time with my husband on the beach and the golf course in the carribean relaxing as well) My only other alternative is to resolve to convince my husband that touring can be fun!
