Any new cutting edge restaurants in Munich?
We will be visiting relatives in Munich soon and would like to reciprocate their hospitality by taking them out to dinner. They are young, educated and like modern, trendy, cutting edge places. Can anyone advise me?

This might vaguely qualify, though it is 27 months old now, and others are likely to have ideas to share with you of newer trendy places as well (I hope)

Two U bahn stops from Opera House is Casa de Tapas at corner of Amalienstrasse and Adalbertstrasse, U bahn Universitat. Really popular Spanish tapas bar and great value. It is generally young crowd but not all yuppies (schicki-micki is German expression) and is busy every day (lots of Munich restaurants are dead earlier in the week). From what you are saying, this will suit your guests very well. My info is now 18 mths old, but in the 18 mths I lived there we went about 8 times and no compplaints, except about the boss there - bit of a dick, but waitresses are very nice. There is also Bar Roma at end of Maximilianstrasse 5 minutes walk from opera, which is for the beautiful people (owned by one of the celebrities of Munich)and is a bit of a rip off, and also Eisbach, which is also only 5 minutes walk away - good "modern" food, which is pretty trendy - all glass walls in a modern building tucked away from main streets - if you do not want the tube ride, go for there.
For a drink only - Cafe Tambosi in Odeonsplatz. Beautiful location if weather is warm for outside, but food and service is frequently crap.
there are other restaurants, which may well come up as recommendations nearby like Spatenhaus (up market Munich beer hall food) and Marstalls (spelling wrong, but opposite opera and one of best restaurants in Munich for years)- but not I think as appropriate for you..

Thanks Rex and Travelnick. I will look into those options. (Schicki-micki - I love it! Actually that might describe the taste of my dear relatives in Munich.) Some I have found in my own stumbling research on Google (don't know if the location of any of these is close to the opera): Annabar, Makassar, Hippocampus, Rue des Halles. Not for this occasion but someplace I might like to visit is Andechser an Dom. Any comments on any of the above, or any other suggestions are appreciated.

Andechs is really good value and a favourite with locals - much smaller than Augustiner or Hofbrauhaus. Its also close to Opera - go for drink before the Opera there. Beer connoiseurs put it very high up. Do not know the ones you mentioned, although heard of Rue des Halles.

We just returned from our trip to Munich and thought I'd report where we finally ended up going to dinner. It was Annabar, part of the Anna Hotel in downtown Munich. I was so pleased with our choice - it was exactly what I had been looking for. Decor is sleek and modern with lit glass panels that gradually change colors. Anna is a chef who creates her own varied and eclectic menu that includes asian noodles with marinated beef, gnocchi with pesto and pinenuts, or vegetable curry with Thai basil - no heavy German food here. The prices were really reasonable, we paid no more than 25 Euros per person, including drinks. We didn't have reservations, but luckily they gave us a table reserved for someone else who didn't show up. Reservations are recommended. The address and phone are: Schützenstrasse 1 (direkt am Stachus), 80335 München
