It would makes lots of sense, to me, to stay within the UK. The reason I considered ditching the whole tour was so I could just concentrate on the UK for the time being.

There's nothing wrong with focusing solely on the UK first, especially if it's your first visit overseas. You can move on to France for the next trip. Just keep in mind that France does have an abundance of medieval ruins, as well.

I congratulate you on your decision to travel independently rather than joining a tour group for such an extended time-frame. While it's perfect for many people, I think doing your own planning will suit you better. Besides, as others have stated, you could always tack on a short day tour here and there as a supplement.

I hope that if you decide to take your brother or boyfriend they either have very similar interests or are willing to go with your flow (it's so much easier on the planner that way).

Yeah my boyfriend and brother said that they would be willing to follow me as long as I don't stick too strictly to my itinerary (which I won't as I am more of a flowly person).

And I'd be doing all the planning beforehand, but they seem to understand that I am the one more interested than they are in the sights so that is good!
