My daughter had her wedding reception here. It's a castle, and it's near Edinburgh! http://www.dalhousiecastle.co.uk/

We heartily second the recommendation of Dalhousie Castle. It is wonderful!

I can also recommend it - I got married there ! Although I think the addition of the "Orangerie" has spoilt it a bit.

Another in the same area which is supposed to be v. nice, but which I haven't visited, is Borthwick Castle.

If you want the oldest inhabited house in Scotland, where Mary Stuart once stayed, head to Traquair House: not really close to Edinburgh, but close enough. The house is operated by the owners, the Maxwell-Stuarts, as a very high class B&B, and Peter Maxwell-Stuart had a brewery on the premises. We love our stays at Traquair.

You might also look at Houston House Hotel. While not technically a castle, it's very old and very nice.
