Any Information on Turkey and Greek Isles
Could anyone who has travelled to Turkey and Greece let me know about prices for pensiones, and what parts of Turkey are the nicest for beaches, and what
were your favourite Greek Isles.
Thanks
Katalin

I cannot imagine any Greek isle with a wider variety of sites to enjoy than Santorini (Thira/Fira). Multi-colored cliffs, archeological wonders, hot springs you can swim to, volcano fumaroles you can walk to; it was WONDERFUL.

Try Antalya on the southern coast of Turkey for great beaches but be sure to wear aqua socks or flip-flops because it's rocky (not sandy). While you're there, see the towns of Aspendos and Perge. There are some interesting ruins at Aphrodiasis. Shopping is ok but it is touristy so prices may be a bit higher than you'll find elsewhere. We traveled all through the western and central part of Turkey last July (ok, so it wasn't the best time of year to go) and had a great time, except for the heat.

I see from a couple postings that the temperature in Turkey in the summer is blazing hot. How is it in the winter? Is it warm enough to swim? What is the ideal time to go there? Thanks
|
The weather in the winter is quite nice, but not warm enough to swim. I was there (in Mersin, on the southern coast) at Christmas time and the temp was around 10C. The further east you go the colder it gets. You can even go skiing in the mountains in the winter. May/June or the end of Aug/beginning of Sept is very nice - weather is great for swimming, not too hot. In Sept you will need pants and a long sleeve shirt for the evening. Feel free to e-mail me with other questions!
