I know you said that you don't want to go back to your hotel room, but the way my husband and I save money on food while traveling is to keep snacks (like bread and fruit) in our room, or maybe pick up some pastries the night before to have in the morning. We skip lunch and eat an early dinner. On the way back to our hotel we might pick up a desert and wine to share before bed... chocolate cake and a bottle of bordeaux, romantic and delicious.

I can't think of any indoor places to sit and eat 'take away' in cold weather, either... but we've eaten salads, sandwiches or quiche with water, or soda in many 'cafes' where light meal for 2 was maybe 60-90 francs/ $8-11, if memory is good. I'm not really talking table service so much as a boulangerie or such with a few tables in it.

The thought of a picnic inside or outside is so romantic to me, I just wish I was not divorced and going to Paris with a female friend; I think wine, cheese, some fruit, more wine, hugging and kissing to keep warm and happy, and from what I heard Lux. park!!!! OOH LA LA to me that is the French experience!!!
