Any Hotel & Activity Recommendations for Lake Bled??
 

I'm traveling with two friends in mid-September (which is fast approaching!) to Eastern Europe and would like to spend two nights in Lake Bled. We'll be taking the train from Zagreb to the Lesce-Bled Train Station.

To that end, I have a few questions! 1.) Does anyone have any hotel recommendations? 2.) How difficult is it to catch a taxi (or equivalent) from the train station into town? We won't have a car with us, so I'm trying to determine how difficult it'll be to get around and see the sites Hopefully, there are buses or transportation arranged by our hotel that we can pay for. 3.) Any general recommendations for Lake Bled?

Over 20 trains a day from Ljubljana call at Lesce-Bled station which is on the main line, but is 4km away, meaning you will either have a lengthy hike or short bus ride into town.

I'd catch the bus.

To do, eat, take the swan boats out to the island, hike up to the castle, walk around the lake, row on the lake, hike in the hillside (some great walking and tourist info has its finger on the pulse)

We stayed at Penzion Mayer and loved it. If you can, have diner one night there, you will not regret it.
We had a car, so can't help with train station info.
You can visit the castle, walk or rent bikes around the lake, take a boat (pletna) to the island, visit Vintgar Gorge, plenty of things to do.

I third the Penzion Mayer! Great place. other great restaurants to try are Pri Planincu, Rustika and 1906 Bled at the Triglav!

Do they accept credit card and cash for payment? They didn't require my credit card to confirm the reservation, so I'm trying to figure out what's customary (or if that's unusual).

I don't believe they required my credit card for confirmation, either, although it was back in 2009, so I could be mistaken. And my recollection is that I used a credit card for the room and both dinners, but again, I can't swear to it. Enjoy!

We were there in 2012 and I'm not sure if they required a credit card for confirmation, but 100% we used one for payment for both room and dinner. Have a great trip!

Thanks kja and xyz99! Last question, do pensiones typically accommodate late check-ins with advance notice?

We might not arrive until late evening and I wasn't sure what etiquette required.

Email them to let them know the expected time you will get there, and see what they say. I'm sure they will accommodate you, but since this is not a place with a 24 hr reception desk, they need to be aware of your aprox arrival time.

If you mean the Penzion Mayer in particular, I'm sure they would be most graciously accommodating -- just make sure you contact them as far in advance as you can to let them plan accordingly. If you mean pensiones more generally, it really varies and you should not assume that there will be anyone there to greet you or let you in if you arrive outside of stated check-in times. Whenever you have a reasonable belief that you might not reach a pension (or, for that matter, any other accommodation) during stated check-in times, you should contact them in advance to make sure that it is possible -- and to make sure that they don't think of you as a no-show and give your room away.
