Any hints on the Prado?

ANyone have hints on getting in and out of the Prado. I recall last time I was there, there was a huge line, then it turned out we were in the wrong line, etc. I know people on this forum always have great hints for how to avoid lines, etc. Any for the Prado?

Beth,
Try to avoid Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings (even though there's free admission at those times)-it's always swamped on weekends! Go on a week day if you can, try to arrive at 9 when it opens and enter through the left side, next to the Hotel Ritz, through the Puerta de Goya, if they have that entrance still open. Lines are usually somewhat shorter there. If you're planning to visit the Centro Reina Sofia and Thyseen-Bornemisza as well, buy a Bono del Arte pass (I believe that's what it's still called) at any of the 3 museum ticket windows valid for a visit to all 3 museums at a reduced price. If you visit the Reina Sofia or Thyssen first and buy your Bono there, you can avoid the long ticket line at the Prado.

As usual, you guys are great! The pass sounds like the thing..we do plan to go to the Reina Sofia. When last in Madrid ('96) we got to the Museum of Modern Art (as it was then called, I think) late in the day and only got to see a couple of things before it closed. I remember running through having to make difficult choices about what not to see! The Picassos there are amazing! Thanks.

I just returned from Madrid two weeks ago and can advise that the Puerta de Goya is indeed open. I arrived about twenty minutes before it opened, and was the third in the line to get in. I dont know what you are planning to see there, but would suggest that if you go early, you should head to the Velazquez area first, as it quickly fills up with people.
Also, keep in mind that while the Prado and the Tyssen Bornemiza are closed on Monday, the Reina Sofia is closed on Tuesday.

Rick Steves has a great book titled Mona Winks. It's a quickie guide to all the great gallerys in Europe. I used it on an art history tour and it was great for the Prado, etc.

Mary
