So, Tiffany wants to go to yellowstone to see Americans. She'll be surprised to find many of the visitors to Yellowstone and other western National Parks are from foreign countries, French, Germans, Pakistnis, Turks, Mexicans, people from all over the world.
And, I know this is shocking, but I've seen these Europeans and others sitting in bars and restaurants and talking to each other. Probably comparing notes and sharing experiences. Imagine, when they could be shooting the breeze with Americans day and night. What is the world coming to.
Oh, and there are foreigners working in the gift shops restaurants and stores in the Western parks, so it will be hard not to interact with them and violate this policy of only talking to Americans while in America.

What is so difficult to grasp about these concepts?:

Making a predetermined decision to meet with other homelanders on a short holiday

vs.

Taking a brief getaway, going with the flow, being open to all who enhance your brief encounter in a foreign land

It's not an either/or issue. Maybe some of us see ourselves more as a small community of travelers, and maybe world citizens. Who's to say that if we're going with our affinities, we're not going with the flow? Maybe to some of us, Paris is not a *foreign* land, but a place of the heart that we return to again and again? For me, it will be blue ribbons on Ile St. Louis, and for the fun of it. Heather and Larry, it sounds as if our times will overlap. Au Revoir!

Folks,

Here is a summary of the Fodorites in Paris:

24-28 May swandav
24-30 May Shanna
26-30 May Sue
26-31 May Lisa
27 May - 2 June Brett

1-9 June Larry
1-4 June Heather
2 June?? Kalena

I'm proposing a dinner get-together on 27 May so that we can include Brett (jet-lagged though you'll be!), Lisa, and Sue. How about meeting at the Brasserie de L'Ile St-Louis at 55 quai de Bourbon at 6 p.m.? If that's too early for dinner, we'll have a few drinks and swap stories. I'm afraid Larry, Heather, & Kalena may have to have another meet. Anyway, I'll be there then - w/blue pin - and ya'll can holler or not as you wish!

And for the rest of you: raspberries!! I've lived in Switzerland, Paris, Germany, and Korea -- so does that make me a traveller, a tourist, an ex-pat, a half-pat or what? I think it'd be a pleasure to meet some compatriots who, for a change, share at least one of my foibles.

Hope to see you there.

s
Thanks, s for pulling this together! Flying from Honolulu as we will be, our flight is just tooo long for us to be civilized on June 2nd. But we'd love to try for June 3rd, at either Brasserie Ile St. Louis or in front of Berthillion. Heather, Larry, Lisa at edu...?

I'll be wearing my blue ribbon at any rate, but I haven't decided whether it will be the latest logo version or not. (Rex, has anyone worried whether or not our generous hosts might consider this a copy-right infringement? ;-)

Connie, there was a recent post with two Paris hotel booking web sites. It would seem unlikely that all Paris would already be booked. It's generally those oft-recommended hotels that get booked early, but there are many, many, others sometimes just as charming. Bonne chance!

a few things which struck me as funny vis a vis the nasties on this post:

1. they assume that Brett wants to only meet homelanders (American, or whatever). Here I thought this site was frequented by anyone with access to the web. gosh, do you think a Parisian might accidentally wander over to read the board? Many of them do speak English you know...

2. those who accuse Brett (or anyone) of being 'timid/insecure' whatever whatever... I think arranging to meet someone based on an internet chat board, in and of itself, is a leap of faith and not precisely a timid act.

nor is traveling to another country (if he is even traveling to another country. based on his initial post alone, he could very well be living in Provence for all I know).

I do wholeheartedly agree though, give me a friendly face over an insufferable twit ANY day of the week. I frankly have lost precise count of the number of times I have been to Europe, going back some 20 years already (yes, I did start QUITE young) and heck, I love meeting people, any people. That's a big reason why I travel - so many interesting folks out there - no matter if they are natives of the country I am visiting, or not...

kalena, thanks for the suggestion. finally had success although much more money than anticipated. was told that the reason for my difficulty is that that is pentecost week-end.I guess lots of french take a holiday at that time. Poor Brett and company. Just asked if anyone wanted to join them. if not, then Ivan and company just keep your reasons to yourself, and leave and these folks to do their thing. Guess I'll have to meet the natives on the 2nd. that suits me fine.
