any electricians out there or power experts?
I've read all the posts on power conversion as well as doing general web research and I can't find a definitive answer to this question!
I undertand the difference between an adapter and a converter and I'm trying to find out if I need to buy a converter for my trip to Paris. I know I need a plug adapter and I have one. I know my camera and my laptop rechargers convert on their own because they say 110-240V on the rechargers but I have a portable fan I want to use in Paris and the information printed on the motor only says: 250V,AC 50/60 Hz. Do I need a power converter for this? Does this mean it can handle up to 250V so I'm fine in France without a converter? It certainly can't mean it needs 250V to run because it runs fine in the states where I understand we only have 110 coming through. And if I use a US extention cord, does that effect things and call for a converter if I'm using an appliance that doesn't need conversion? Any clarity is much appreciated! |
I only know that we used a short extension cord with a 3-plug end for our cell phones and laptop (which don't need a converter). So, the adaptor plug went into the wall, the extension cord into the adaptor, then our electronics into the 3-plug end.
So that answers a tiny part of your question. |
It will probably be cheaper and less hassle if you purchased a portable fan in Paris at some discount shop.

Hi P,
>the information printed on the motor only says: 250V,AC 50/60 Hz. ...it runs fine in the states ...< I woould expect it to run slow in the states. If it runs at the same speed as another fan, it has probably been mislabeled. If your fan has been properly labeled, you can use it in France without burning it out. ((I)) |
French voltage is 220-230. Your fan will run fine with the plug adapter. |
Thanks Ira. I'll have to check on the fan and make sure it's properly labeled but I think it is.
I know that many think it easier to buy a fan there, but this one makes the perfect white noise for sleep and is also great for cooling if we need it. I'd rather not spend my time in Paris shopping for the right fan when we have plenty of room to pack this one. We're spending 11 days in one location (in a budget hotel!) so we've decided to bring a little larger suitcase and have some of our comforts from home. |
