Any driving tips?
 

For our upcoming vacation. When we leave Roma we will be using a rental car for the drive down to and around Amalfi. Any one have driving tips, 'must see' points of interest, other observations, that would be helpful. Of course I will drive fast and wave my arms alot.....<BR>grazie.

I would advise you to wear your seat belt, bring a crash helmet, be certain your life insurance and health insurance premimiums are up to date and say the rosary 200 times before getting into a car in Italy. Have you ever seen the way Italians drive? They think 2 inches from your bumper at 120 KPH is a safe distance. Not to mention that the guy on your tail is talking with his hands to everyone in his car while impatiently waiting for an opportunity to go around you. Good luck and god bless you.

ed w<BR><BR>On the Amalfi coast road I would go for a 4 wheel drive vehicle with a LOW center of gravity. Also, you may want to apply your motion sickness patch behind your ear about 2 hours before attempting this feat. Drive slowly and NEVER take your eyes off the road at any time. Get a passenger with a digital video camera and let them video the scenic wonder and beauty of the Amalfi coast. When you get home you can safely enjoy the splendor of this spectacular coastline. Ed W<BR><BR>I would rent a 3200 GT Maserati, a bottle of 1988 Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne Clos du Mesnil, a red scarf and drive like the wind from Roma to Amalfi.

edward w<BR><BR>One tip that i think is very important nowadays is don't talk on a cell phone while driving. Did you know it's against the law in New York.

Ed<BR><BR>The Amalfi coast drive is the one of the curviest ( is that a word? ) roads in the world. Something like 1000 curves between Sorrento and Amalfi. It is incredible but the above post about keeping your eyes on the road is good advice. Be careful and enjoy your trip.

Driving in Italy in some ways is preferable to driving in the US. They stay out of the fast lane unless passing and actually allow you to change lanes when you are signaling to do so.<BR><BR>If you use the Autostrada you will find frequent rest stops (some with restaurants) and good signage. You take a ticket shortly after you get on and pay when you get off.<BR><BR>We've never driven the Amalfi road. We went on a SITA bus from Sorrento so we could both enjoy the scenery, which is absolutely breathtaking.<BR><BR>I would recommend obtaining a good Michelan map or atlas, as well as familiarizing yourself with the road signs. I'm always the navigator; my husband the driver and it works well. Getting out of cities can be troublesome, but it's all part of the adventure of traveling.<BR><BR>Don't listen to these nervous nellies. You'll get along fine.<BR>

Drive your car like it's made of glass in a crowd of stone throwers. Always try to foresee trouble, and never expect the other driver to do the right thing. It's kept me out of trouble.
