Any details on the explosions at the Istanbul Airport?

I read the news, not a lot of details-- two explosions, gunfire. I was there less than a year ago, security was tight.

There are at least ten dead from the explosion and gunfire, according to the BBC.

This so tragic. Thinking of poster Otherchelebi and his family.

Thanks for the link. I went through 3-4 security checks during a recent trip to/from JFK. Truly an international airport with tremendous diversity of passengers and destinations. Popular hub airport for cruise passengers. I was very leery of taking a Turkish Airlines flight, but was truly impressed by their service and planes.

There we go again...

Oh no! So sad for the victims, and for Turkey. A friend is due there on Saturday. (I'm due there in September.)

IMDonehere Jun 28th, 2016 01:39 PM

OC's wife has posted on FB, they are OK.

The security at Ataturk is quite tight. It is a shame that the wonderful people and culture of Turkey are under attack by both Erdogan and terrorism.

Whathello Jun 28th, 2016 01:42 PM

Yes, such nice people and such a nice country.
I'm right now in Istanbul and we talked about attacks at lunch...
Taking a flight back at 11 am, but from Sabiha Gokcen, I'll keep you posted.

It seems it will be difficult to check in at any airport without high anxiety anymore.

My trip next week to Europe will be very nerve wracking for me.

brubenow Jun 28th, 2016 01:49 PM

Wishing you s safe flight, Whathello

Whathello Jun 28th, 2016 01:54 PM

Thanks !

Next week going to Berlin... Anxiety is not helping, when we take a car we know we risk to die in crash, now we know we risk to die blasted in an airport or anywhere in the street for that matter.

Whathello Jun 28th, 2016 01:55 PM

Deathtoll is rising. 28 reported now.
I hope it includes the 3 basterds who blew themselves.

raincitygirl Jun 28th, 2016 01:58 PM

Oh this is awful.
Safe flight home whathello.

IMDonehere Jun 28th, 2016 02:19 PM

It seems the killing took place before the first security check outside the terminal.

brubenow Jun 28th, 2016 02:43 PM

Yes. Just like Brussells airport.

Treesa Jun 28th, 2016 03:02 PM

IMDone, thanks for posting about OC and his family. This is just horrible.

Macross Jun 28th, 2016 03:24 PM

I think they are dead but as in the Orlando shooting we never counted the killer in the toll. Most radio people will not even say his name. Whathello, leave plenty early, surprised you can get a flight out so quick in Turkey at all.

emily71 Jun 28th, 2016 04:05 PM

Very sad as it's a beautiful country and the people are kind-especially outside Istanbul. It's very East meets West, European feeling but with the mosques, calls to prayers and many Middle Eastern tourists in their burkas.

Sadly today won't hurt Turkey's leaders but the innocent folks making a living from tourism. Glad we went when we did.

Viajero2 Jun 29th, 2016 02:41 AM

Flying into Brussels next month on our way to Krakow. At this point, it is what it is. I refused to give up and give in to fears fueled by a bunch of righteous barbarians.

Istanbul Airport- Ataturk is up and running again amidst the debris-- that's what I call resilience. Bravo Turkey!

IMDonehere Jun 29th, 2016 03:04 AM

It is interesting on these boards that death and destruction in Turkey hardly gets a mention, while the horrors in Paris, London, and Brussels, go one for days with hundreds of lamentations.

Prejudice or complacency?

Macross Jun 29th, 2016 03:54 AM

imdonehere, how do you think I felt when no condolences of Orlando were mentioned? I was impacted by this and nothing from our European Friends except a snide remark in another post. I didn't bring it up thinking surely someone would offer a simple I am sorry. Is it complacency or just dislike of the USA, I was not sure. I checked the USA boards and nothing. We are still in shock here. I just finished reading pages of news and watched CNN for a while last night. It is horrible the innocent life tht they took. Seems the first gun man distracted security and the other two came in very easy and blew up themselves.
