Any current info on travelling with a CPAP machine?
 

Somewhere I read that a medical device does not count as a carry on on personal item.

Is that true?

Interesting question, my father uses one of those, but we never thought to ask about that. Next time we travel I will ask the airline. In the meantime, I hope someone else can give us some insight.

My doctor told me that since it is a medical device it is not counted as part of your carry-on luggage. I have not tested the theory though.

I was able to find a fact sheet that is a couple of years old that states that medical equipment is not counted as carry-on or personal.

I put mine IN my carry on. I also tell the x-ray person it is in there.

If you have it in the carry case it's not counted as part of your carry on allotment.

Last summer, my partner carried it on as one of two pieces, the other being his backpack. (1 other luggage piece of his was checked).

He even carried the same 2 pieces aboard our RyanAir flights within Europe, even though the budget airlines typically state that only one carryon is allowed. The medical equipment exemption apparently applies also in Europe.

One other thing: check carefully to see that your CPAP is dual-voltage compatible. You don't want to have happen to your CPAP what happened to our toothbrush charger one unfortunate night (Boom!)
