Any comments on Sloane Square Moat House Hotel
I'm looking at a travel package that features the Sloane Square Moat House. Any first hand comments on the hotel and it's location? I've looked at several websites but those reviews are usually written by the hotels themselves. Would be interested to hear from someone who has actually stayed there. Thank you in advance.

I stayed there in 1996, back when it was still called the Royal Court Hotel, and I thought the location was fine. There are a lot of nice (and expensive) shops nearby, and a subway stop on the other side of Sloane Square.

For what it's worth (which may not be much, after seven years and a name change), I was impressed with the service at the hotel. It was raining on the day I checked out, and I had so much to carry I didn't have a free hand for an umbrella, so one of the hotel staff walked me to the subway while holding an umbrella over my head and carrying one of my bags.

linda_i,
If you're still interested in the Sloane Square Moat House, you can find some comments about the neighborhood, from someone who stayed at the hotel last year, on this thread: http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessa...17&start=0 |
That would be me! It was a fantastic location. We took the train from the airport to Victoria Station and actually walked (it was a long walk but a gorgeous morning and after being on a cramped plane...). Don't know that I'd do that with luggage again. Since we arrived at the hotel around 9AM I was pleasantly surprised that they had a room ready for us. (I'd expected to have to check our bags and come back to move in later!) The rooms are standard-European small and not exactly decorator chic as the website suggests, but perfectly comfortable. We had a window overlooking the square and kept it open when we were there and at night. The front desk people are very helpful. The breakfast is excellent (and included). There was an adult choral group staying there while we were there, and what appeared to be a small high-school Senior trip group that was there one night. But the hotel was quiet and seemed well able to handle small groups as well as independent travelers. We'll stay there again.

Uhoh Busted, I'm curious... How different are the rooms from the photos on the Website. I'm booked into an "executive level" double (20. GBP premium for "nicer room" and ammenities)facing the Square and I hope I won't be disapointed. Thanks.

I've stayed there twice, and the location is fabulous! There's the Sloane Square tube stop right outside - very convenient - and Sloane Square itself is in a great part of town, right on the King's Road and near Chelsea (I'm not sure, maybe it's officially IN Chelsea?), and also very near Harrod's, etc and the shopping on Sloane Street.
We had good experiences there, and both times had a room with a view out over the square. Love this hotel! However, it can be a bit noisy with all of the traffic below, but when I couldn't sleep at night (due to jetlag), I enjoyed hanging out the window and watching the night unfold below. |
I'm very familiar with the area. I always stay on Sloane Gardens, just off the Square. LunaBella, what I was wondering about are the rooms. They look very nice on the website. Are they they equally nice in person? Uhoh_Busted felt they weren't.

I think they were very nice, but then again, I don't usually spend as much on European hotels as this one charges. (Truth be told, we got a big discount on this hotel both times through friends.)
The first room we had actually had a separate sitting room (!) which I wasn't expecting, with a set of bay windows that you could open. We could see the entire square and both ways down the King's Road from our room. Wonderful people watching and also fun to watch the red busses and black cabs go by, and a great room to just hang out the window and think "pinch me, I'm in London!" The other time we didn't have the sitting room, but still a nice view, and both times the rooms were clean, good working bathroom...but to be honest, once past basic cleanliness, we're not very demanding customers, especially when we've gotten a great discount! What we really appreciate is location, and this hotel has got it in spades. |
