Any comments about Bristol?
 

Any comments about Bristol? Worthwhile? A quick search on the internet shows that it's just a city in the UK. Did I miss anything?<BR><BR>I'm thinking of staying there for a few days after a meeting.

Bristol has a lot going for it. It is a great city to live/work in and there are a couple of really good museums, the Clifton Suspension Bridge, etc. - but for a first-time visitor to the UK your time is probably better spent elsewhere.

If you want somewhere to stay for a while after a meeting, then Bristol is a lively city, with a good university,art galleries, theatres, cinemas, docks and the inn that appeared in 'Treasure Island'! It's also easy to get to Bath from Bristol by train if you want a contrast.

We spent only a half day in Bristol on our way from Gloucester to Bath and would have spent more had we time. <BR><BR>Two sights to see in Bristol are the SS Great Britain and St Mary Radcliffe Church. <BR><BR>The SS GB when we were there in 2000 was partially restored. It was launched in 1843 and was the first iron-built, propeller driven Atlantic liner. Very interesting.<BR><BR>The church dates from the 1200s and was one of the favorites of Queen Elizabeth I. That's Henry VIII daughter.<BR><BR>For those who wonder, I keep dozens of brochures for places we've visited. My memory isn't that good. And I couldn't travel without the Michelin Green Guides since much of our travelling is unstructured and Michelin contains so much timeless info. Sorry Fodors. <BR><BR>

Hiroshi, I don't know if this is up your alley, but there is a great place to stay right near Bristol called Thornbury Castle. It's kind of a destination itself. It's an authentic, restored castle which dates from the 16th century. Amazing rooms, amazing service, amazing ambience. You can play archery and croquet on the front lawn, have tea in the garden, and meet people from all over the world in the library. We even had a champagne picnic with the owners one evening at cocktail time. We stayed there at the end of a 2 week trip to England in 2000 and it remains one of our favorite memories. This may or may not be your thing.

Bristol is great - It's a &quot;black and white&quot; city; if youlike the timbered look, this is it. Lovely to walk around, if you are already there, take advantage of it, then head over to Bath and stay in a B&amp;B.
