I'd recommend Avis. I used Avis in Germany, UK, and Spain. Maybe it is because of my "Express" membership, I checked with AutoEurope too, but Avis was always lower. Call Avis and tell them you want to sign up for Express Membership first before making reservations.
Tom

Amy- I've used Hertz, Avis, Europcar,National, and AutoEurope. They are all OK. Just make reservations in the states. Check prices and compare-
They all change prices almost daily depending on the demand. You can usually book and then cancel if you find something cheaper. For the best rates, I
have always had to prepay. Be sure to get a confirming fax from them and carry it with you so there's no argument. Insurance is another matter you should investigate. Your credit card insurance is usually only good for a couple of weeks, and your normal car insurance (which usually covers rentals in the US) probably isn't valid in Europe. Anyway my AAA insurance isn't.
Be careful and remember, there are sections of the Autobahn that have speed limits.
Have a good time-

I've rented from Europe By Car and from Sixt in Germany, for a week each time, and found both companies alright. But I will avoid renting a car there in the future. The efficiency and the frequency of the German train system, which will take you to nearly everywhere you'd wish to go, make train travel just way too liberating and fun. With a German Railpass, the "Happy Weekend" tickets, and/or the numerous national and other offers available from DB, the price is so competitive with driving that it's almost a no-brainer. No parking hassles, no road navigation, no traffic jams (these happen even on the Autobahns) and no $50 tank-ups for me -- I want to enjoy my vacation -- and part of the fun is just looking out the window or chatting with your fellow train travellers.

I'm a car person, especially when I'm travelling with a companion or two. I get far more out of a trip when i have a car. I've found Holiday Autos very competitive, and easy to book on-line. I have just organised cars for my forthcoming trip to Portugal (3 weeks) and Germany (3 weeks). Their prices are all-inclusive, except for a bond and of course gas.
We just returned a few weeks ago from a trip to Bavaria and we rented through AutoEurope. We were very pleased and we recommend them highly. We had absolutely no problems - we got the car we reserved (an Audi A6), and the rental was done through Avis - the Avis staff at the Munich airport was excellent and very helpful. Go for Autoeurope!

I may be incorrect but I belive Auto Europe is something like a wholesaler in that you may get a car from a different company each time.

We have rented from Budget/Sixt many many times because they are usually the cheapest. Their service has been excellent. I had a car vandalized in Prague and once crashed a $53,000 Mercedes into a garage. No problem. No fuss. I was amazed. From the helpful desk people to the low prices we had absolutely no complaints about them.

Hi Amy,

We have not tried AutoEurope yet, but what we usually do is use a site called CarandVanRental.com where you can compare rates from all the major car hire companies by doing a quick search. We have found some excellent deals this way and would highly recommend it as an option.

Hope this is helpful,

Regards,

Robert.

I am currently in the process of arranging a car rental in Munich. I rented from Sixt the last time we were there in 1995. My question to anyone out there is, with a Visa Gold card, would one also purchase the complete comprehensive collision insurance from the car rental company? I called my Visa and was advised to decline it. Your thoughts/experiences?
