if you are fans of Foyle's War, you might try Hastings>

Not sure what Foyle's War was (a war between bookstores?) but just a few miles from Hastings is Battle, scene of the original Battle where William the Conqueror conquered Saxon king Harold and smit much of the Saxon army - the battlefield is still there with an old abbey - really nice pastoral setting - short drive from Hastings - if into walking - probably not with 5 yr old there are some nice footpaths leading from Hastings up the valley to Battle, which is also a nice old vilage.

I stayed in Hasting a few days once - really nice beach and all the accouterments of a seaside resort but also a real regional town.

and you the renowned anglophile, Pal? Michael Kitchen plays the eponymous WW2 police inspector based in Hastings. nice plots, good acting, lovely scenery. I'd forgotten about Battle.

I don't know how it would be for children but Battle was a lovely town for an overnight visit. There used to be a old fashioned sweet shop near the Abbey but I don't think it's there any more.

Hopefully, Foyle's War comes back to Hastings next season, I miss the small town feel.
