any advice on car rental?

We are planning to tour tuscany by car for a week in September. I have checked out the main American Car Rental companies (Avis, Hertz) and they seem really expensive. Does anyone have any experience with Auto Europe, or can you recommend another car rental agency. Also, are we better off in a small economy car if we will be touring (and staying in) the hilltowns in Tuscany?

Thanks!

Check rentacar-europe.com and autoeurope.com

Both are reputable companies that have been used by many posters here. Sometimes one has better prices, sometimes the other depending on where, when, what kind of car.

AutoEurope is excellent. If you go to the bottom of the page on the price page you will see all the insurances the prices cover. Far, far below the big rental agencies. AutoEurope is an American company so they are easy to deal with. They use cars from Avis, etc. They also have an agreement to give you low mileage cars. The last time we rented we received a brand new Alfa Romeo. You have no worries to rent with them and you will be completely covered with insurance in Italy. In other countries you have to see what they cover, but in Italy you have no worries.

I just read the rest of your message. As I said, we had an Alfa Romeo last time. I wouldn't go any larger than that.

We returned from France last week and had rented a car for a week.

We used Nova to get a good quote (through the net) and then Auto Europe matched the quote.
The rep said that Auto Europe policy is to always match a quote. Many people say they are the best company and we also found them to be very good. The rate Auto Europe matched was $100 cheaper than their price quoted on the net (after the 15% discounts). The actual provider was Europcar.

Actually on our last 3 trips we have consistently found Nova rental out of northern Ireland ( do a search for their site) to beat AutoEurope and the offer good service too.

I heard somewhere that if you are going to rent for more than 2 weeks it is usually better to lease. Has anyone done this?

Just curious--if you have a low quote from nova, why bother to go to autoeurope to get the same price? Both are good reputable, companies that deliver good service.

I always check both nova and autoeurope's prices before I arrange rental just to see what the rates are, and have never bothered to ask autoeurope to match nova's price. We just use nova since we've had good experiences with them.
The reason for getting and using a price match is the good reputation of Auto Europe. We were not aware that Nova has an exceellent reputation also--per the other posters in this thread. Also their cancellation policy was more liberal. (war and everything going on at the time)
