Any advice for driving from Milan to Munich?
 

I found airfare to Munich with Alitilia from May 28-June 7 for $868 R/T through Expedia for me and my wife. On Alitilia.com the fare was double for the same flights. We have a layover in Milan and I was thinking of skiping the flight to Munich and just rent a car instead for a little extra sightseeing. This is our 1st wedding anniversary and 1st time to Europe. Is this possible crossing borders through Italy, Switz, and Germany with a rental car? Any help is greatly appreciated

I am sure there are no restrictions crossing borders through Italy, Switzerland, Austria and Germany. I think that you will be charged a high fee for dropping off the car in a different country (Germany, if I understand correctly), though.

Anyway, the driving route from Milan along Lake Como, St. Moritz, down the Inn valley to Imst, via Fernpass and Garmisch to Munich is very scenic. Do yourselves a favour and stay a night in the quaint village Guarda (30 miles from St. Moritz).

There are no problems driving from one country to another in a rental car. We typically get our rental car in Germany. They will NOT let you take more expensive rentals into Italy (ie Mercedes). But you can get a very nice car that you can take anywhere without restrictions. Don't know about drop-off charges for pick-up in one place and drop-off in another, but I'd guess you will pay a hefty charge.

You may have a problem skipping a scheduled flight. You may want to check airline policies on this.

I think you may have less problem skipping the onward Milan-Munich segment if you notify the airline that you won't be using it.
As to the driving portion..if all you want to do is look at the scenery between the two cities and don;t need the car for its flexibility along the way you might look at training between the two. However, the usual route with the least number of changes (one) is through Verona (where you change) and takes at least 7 hours...pretty scenery up through the Dolomites and over the Brenner Pass into Austria through Innsbruck and on into Germany. Just a thought.

I would take the flight, because gas is about $4.00 a gallon, plus you use euros which are worth about as much as $.78 USD
You wouldn't go through Switzerland any way, but the drive is beautiful
