Any Advice Appreciated
 

I will be arriving in Prague on 8/13 and have made hotel arrangements to stay until
8/17. Originally, I thought to travel to Budapest, but the train ride is 6 hours and I would waste a day at each end. I need to be back in Prague on the 21st so that I can catch my Easyjet flight back to London on the 22nd of August.
So, the in between time could be spent touring the outskirts of Prague or going to Budapest.
I would welcome any experienced traveller's advice.
Finally, would you recommend hiking boots with thick rubber soles for Prague's cobblestone streets or are good walking shoes enough?

You don't need hiking boots in Prague. I noticed that the people who live there wear regular shoes.

In my experiences in Prague I would have to say that the sidewlalks are in at least as good, if not better, shape than those in New York City..and not all the sidewalks are cobblestones. I'm really sorry you decided against Budapest..another wonderful city where good walking shoes are more than adequate. Enjoy your vacation!

As you have several days free, I would use the time to visit another Czech city, it is a great oppotunity for that. For example, you could stay overnight in Cesky Krumlov which is only about 3-4 hours from Prague.

I def. agree with above advice on not wearing hiking boots around town, especially in summer! Every street doesn't have cobblestones, either. When I've been there in warmer weather, lots of people just wear sandals. If you don't have a good pair of walking sandals, you might want that, instead. It can get pretty hot in Prague.

You might consider a short trip to Bratislava, which lies between Prague and Budapest. It's the capital of Slovakia and, like Prague, has a castle high on a hill and a nice, but smaller, old square area. When in Prague, I took an afternoon sightseeing tour to Kutna Hora, a medieval mining town, which was interesting. You might also even consider a couple of days in Vienna, if you haven't been. It's a few hours from Prague by train.
