While we are inFrance I would love to buy some local tiles. Are there any particlar areas to go to, and are the designs different in different areas? Are antique tiles availabel int he antique shops?

there is a tile shop, i believe, in old mougins, and you can certainly find tiles at the french equivalent of home depot.
