antequera???
greetings friends.
we are spending a week in Nerja and are considering Antequera as one of our day trips.Does anyone have any helpful input on this choice,or perhaps other suggestions. Currently we are going to the Caves of nerja, the Alhambra, the rock of Gibraltar, and Frigiliana. Many thanks

IMO Ronda is well worth going to, but might be a bit long for a day trip from Nerja--not sure about this--maybe other Fodorites could help here. But we were there last year and plan to return again in November. (This time I'm going to take something to help with my vertigo because the ride there is very steep and curvy.) But the town is wonderful and well worth the trip.

I've heard good things about Antequera and plan to go in November. Please let us know how you like it.

We were only in Frigiliana to make train reservations and IMO it had little appeal and I wouldn't recommend it, but maybe we missed something.

We loved Nerja and the caves and Alhambra. Make sure you get tickets in advance for Alhambra--you can do so on the Internet.

Also, from what I've heard, Gilbraltar isn't necessarily such a great place, but I haven't been there,so am not really sure about this.

Antequerra has the advantage of not being on the typical tourist route for bus tours etc. It is a very rich with history and old churches etc. Not sure when the churches are open etc.If you eat there try one of the special buns of that area called "malleta" .Great with ham and cheese!

Gibralter is awful unless you like lengthy border crossing queues, English Pubs advertising sausage and chips and you want to shop at Marks and Spencer. The rock is OK, but not worth the trip. The monkeys are nasty!

Calvo- I am glad that I did not miss Gibraltar. We took one of those day trip bus/ferry tours which is highly unusual for us, but it is convenient and there are no long queues.
I liked the monkeys but they are opportunistic, wild animals. If they see something they like they will take it. Keep that in mind when you get anywhere near them. I was very impressed with the caves. I could not imagine a huge underground hospital and the concert theater is pretty amazing. Several of the non-English speaking people on our tour were thrilled to go to Gibraltar to buy English pajamas. (At Marks and Spencer?) I don't know why. Alhambra is very impressive. Definitely go there especially if you have any interest in architecture. |
About halfway to Granada on the road from Nerja you will see an exit for Lanjaron. Head thru Lanjaron and on up to Bubion and Capiliera. Great little Alpujarras towns.
