Ansbach to Nuremberg, Germany

Hi Everyone,

I'm going to be in Nuremberg for the Toy Fair. Every place to stay is basically booked in Nuremberg and the surrounding area. I did find one place available in Ansbach. Ansbach is part of the VGN - and seems to be close enough to Nuremberg. We'd also like to take day trips to surrounding towns just to visit. I wanted to find out if anyone has stayed in Ansbach and taken the train to Nuremberg or vice versa and if so, has it been ok. We will more than likely be taking this train for 4 days back and forth between the two. Also wanted to find out if Ansbach is a nice place to stay. The fair is end of January/beginning of February so I know weather is going to be questionable.

Any other pointers on Ansbach or VGN?
Thank you so much!

I lived in Roßtal (years ago) between the two and took the train to work some of the time. I have traveled Ansbach to Nürnberg a few times in recent years. There was no problem with it. There are frequent trains (Sbahn and Regional Express) between Ansbach and Nürnberg with no need for transfers. You should have no difficulty. A single direction ticket is 9.10 € but the day ticket (Tages Ticket Plus) is only 16.80 € for both ways. It is also good for more than one person but I do not remember the details. I enjoyed the area.

VGN has a pretty tight network and their schedule for the trains and buses are integrated very well into the DB Smart Phone App as well as Öffi Stations. The Deitsche Bahn website does a pretty good job of keeping up t date on delays and such. The S-Bahn runs regularly so no issues there.

Ansbach is in tariff zone 9. As was mentioned above, a single journey is 9.10 Euro, a day ticket plus (good for two people) is 16.80 Euro, but you can buy a seven day ticket (7-Tage-MobiCard) for 64.50 Euro. If there are two of you, I think in this case buying a Tages Ticket Plus every day is the best bet.

I am totally jealous that you get to go to this toy fair. I'd love to go but I am not in the industry ;__;

We stayed in Nuremburg and travelled by train to Ansbach - it was easy to do and Ansbach is a nice town.

Thank you for the great responses! We booked our hotel in Ansbach. We have been to Nuremberg but never Ansbach so we are excited to see this area and it seems a great place for a couple of day trips. On the VGN site I had trouble pulling up the timetable for Ansbach to Nuremberg. I typed Ansbach Hbf to Nuremberg Hbf - wondering if I'm typing it in wrong? I then went to bahn.de and found that it's about 30-45 minute ride each way?

Sparckchaser - this is our first time going to the Nuremberg Toy Fair. Have been to the one in NYC but I love European toys so I'm thinking this one is going to be wonderful - am amazed and how fast the hotels booked.

We are flying into and out of Munich and will probably stay in Munich that last night before our flight. Thank you again for all of the great information!

"...We'd also like to take day trips to surrounding towns just to visit...."

Ansbach is the first of two stops where people change trains when coming from Nürnberg and going to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. So if you go to Rothenburg (recommended), you'll just have one quick switch to do, in Steinbach.

The VGN site may want the German name in correct spelling. Enter either "Nürnberg" or, if you can't type the Umlaut, "Nuernberg".

Am also interested in visiting or staying in Ansbach next spring. I'd love to see a trip report and review of your hotel and Ansbach! Have a great time at the Toy Fair.

On the VGN site I had trouble pulling up the timetable for Ansbach to Nuremberg. I typed Ansbach Hbf to Nuremberg Hbf - wondering if I'm typing it in wrong?

The VGN site takes some practice. It's not as user-friendly as the DB site.

On the VGN site, you want the Ansbach Banhof and the Nuremberg Huptbahnhof stops like this: http://i.imgur.com/CSUnSak.png

Then click on Anfragen to get the schedule: http://i.imgur.com/CGseNYs.png

Or, you can just click these two links and get the pdf timetables for the S4 to/from Ansbach:

http://www.vgn.de/efa9/efa97/vgn_www/AHF/00003e95.pdf
http://www.vgn.de/efa9/efa98/vgn_www/AHF/00004175.pdf

This is the main S4 link: http://www.vgn.de/komfortauskunft/tt...=1&lineName=S4

You're welcome

The VGN site may want the German name in correct spelling. Enter either "Nürnberg" or, if you can't type the Umlaut, "Nuernberg".

The VGN site also accepts the English spelling "Nuremberg".

This is great information! Thank you! Is it recommended that we purchase in advance or can we purchase the day of at the train station (tickets for Ansbach to Nuremberg?). Our tickets from Munich airport to Ansbach we will more than likely purchase in advance. And yes, I have found the VGN site a bit tougher to use. Thank you again!

You can purchase your ticket the day of. The VGN tickets don't have a discount for buying ahead of time.

Buying the ticket from the Airport to Ansbach in advanced may be of no advantage. Local trains on the Bayern Ticket (26 euros) take about 3-3.5 hours. Using fast trains (ICE, etc.) on an advanced ticket (49 euros) take about the same 3-3.5 hours, sometimes a little less. Plus these Sparpreis fares are for fixed connections. The Bayern Ticket is cheaper and more flexible. It is bought the day of travel.

When you check on Die Bahn change the "Means of Transportation" to "only local transport" to see the Bayern Ticket connections. Gary

Gary, a Tages ticket is cheaper than a Bayern ticket.

"Gary, a Tages ticket is cheaper than a Bayern ticket."

I was addressing the trip from the Munich Airport to Ansbach. Check a couple entries earlier. Regards, Gary

Ah, you are correct! Sorry about that.

Check for Sparpreis fares (you can begin searching for tickets 90 days in advance) because chances are good that you can get a ticket for two for less than a Länder-Ticket.

I was just going to ask about tickets on the bahn.de site (on there now) and so I see I might as well wait to buy the Bayern ticket the day of to get from Munich Airport to Ansbach (thank you Gary). Sparkchaser, I will need to check on the Sparpreis fares and Lander-ticket - not familiar with these.

Thank you for your help!

Yikes - 3 changes on the "local transport" route from Munich Airport to Ansbach. I think I found that on the ICE there are 2 changes, so not much better and more expensive. We typically drive while in Germany or take direct trains (have gotten lucky) - hopefully the 5 minute transfer time they give is enough time to find the right connecting train.

Unless doing something wrong, I think the Lander-ticket (26 euro) may work out best as we 'may' once checking into the hotel, jump back on the train and visit another nearby town - need to do more research on Ansbach and immediate surrounding towns.

Die Bahn will not list a connection unless they think it is doable. We have only missed 1 connection over 8 trips with many legs. Plus, there is usually another train within an hour. When you buy the lander ticket, you can also get schedules from the ticket machine or the sales person that will list the projected gates at each station. Verify with the overhead board.

Regarding other local towns, you might consider some wine villages on the River Main. Ochsenfurt and Marktbreit are about 45 minutes north of Ansbach by train:
