Another Rome taxi question

How much should I be paying for a taxi ride that is less than 2 km. starting at the Termini train station? Extra charges for luggage? Thanks.

Last year, going from Termini to my apartment drop-off location, about 1 block from Piazza Navona, the cost was 8 euros. That was for a single rider, no luggage, several trips.

Just got back. Four of us with luggage paid 12 E to go from Chiesa Nouva near the Piazza Navona to the train station.

Scroll down to ordinary taxi fares to see the rates that can be charged.

Otherwise this site, which - like the one of the Rome Comune - can sometimes be a bit hit-and-miss on Sundays, usually gives a pretty good indication...

The tourist office in the airport gave us the best advice. According to the address we had, they recommended taking the train to the Trastavere station for 8 euros and from there the streetcar to the stop after the bridge for 1 euro. It worked fine in spite of arriving in the rush hour. This solution might work for anyone staying near the Campo de Fiori area (5 mintes from our "B&B") or in the Trastevere.

At Termini, be sure to get an official taxi by standing in the official taxi line. It may be a long line but it moves fast. Do not take the offer of someone walking up to you to offer their taxi service- it will be an expensive rip-off.

? You didn't ask for travel advice (evidently you wanted cheapest) from the airport on this thread. You asked for taxi cost from Termini. You would have received different answers for FCO/cheapest transport into Rome.

The Sitbusshuttle is only $8 from FCO to Termini also.

I've had a bad experience even in the official line at Termini - first there was a person who sort of directed us into the cab and then held out their hand, which I did not hand any money to! And I also think that driver overcharged us - it was the most expensive taxi ride from Termini to our hotel and it was not the longest by any means. I went ahead and paid (maybe 20E, not far from Piazza Nuvona) in part because we had not actually located the hotel (is was very well hidden)and I felt I had no back up if I wanted to dispute the fare. I should have just handed over a reasonable amount and walked away. Now days I stay within walking distance of Termini and that's part of the reason why.

So IMO there still can be problems even in the official line, its good that you are getting price guesstimates here - the "handler" seemed to have a bit of the classic Romany appearance, not sure if he was working all the cabs or just the one I happened to get into. Maybe the local police have eliminated this practice now. Termini = extra vigilance at all times.

The bus from the airport is a good idea is there are less than 4 people. After that, when you add up 32E for 4, plus 12 or so to hotel from Termini, it is just as inexpensive to have a driver standing there waiting for you. Ours was 50E for 4 with luggage from airport to apartment on Nouvo Vigna near Navona, and, after a long flight, to me it is always worth it.

Earlier this month, we arrrived at Termini and headed for the official taxi stand. I'd read on someone's blog that Radio Taxi would be a reliable taxi, I'd printed out official info about what taxis could charge (all in Italian, unfortunately), We were familiar with the area and our hotel, and I told the driver exactly where we wanted to be taken. He argued a bit, we settled on the intersection. Then when we arrived, the meter said 11 Eu and he insisted on 17!! I knew the first bag was supposed to be free, and we only had 2 bags total. I was too exhausted to argue, so we paid him the 17 Eu. The concierge at the hotel was angry and said we were definitely overcharged.

Later we had a great radio taxi driver who drove us much further and charged around 6 Eu.

The rates from FCO are very clear (40Eu) - legally set. I wish it were as easy with Termini.

Termini victim here. Just once out of many rides, but it can happen, official taxi line and everything. The guy charged us 25 euro from Termini to Teatro Pace behind P. Navona. We fought, we weren't in front of our B&B, it was all a mess, but he ended up with the money.

Now when I get in a taxi at Termini, before I shut the door I ask the driver how much it will be to my destination.

That's why I posted my latest information. Navonna is only one street car stop beyond the one we used. However, it means that if you arrive in the late afternoon, you must put up with rush hour crowds that are taking the local train back to Rome.

After our incident with the Termini taxi driver, I remembered that I should have demanded a receipt. I'm not sure it would have helped our situation, but I sure wanted to complain to someone. I already was aware that the drive would be longer than it looked on a map, due to trafffic patterns and one-way streets, etc (we'd been there before), but the "add-on" of an additional 5 Eu really threw me.

I don't understand paying a gouging taxi driver. Have had the experience only once - and I paid im what I thought was correct and walked away while he should rude remarks in Czech. I just told him to call the police if he had a problem.

Naturally it's trickier if you have luggage. In that case have him help you get the luggage out of the trunk before paying. (But do be sure that he's gouging. There are all sorts of legal surcharges for luggage, time, holidays etc)
