What about if you stay at a hotel in the Heathrow vicinity and visit a non-central London attraction? I'm thinking that you could land, catch breakfast somewhere, drop luggage, (maybe rent a car) and see Windsor Castle or Hampton Court. Have a leisurely day, turn in early, and fly on to Austria the next day.

What's the deal with jet lag?
Maybe my youth spent doing graveyard hours and 24 hour shifts has really messed up my clock....I did not feel any severe jet lag when traveling. I was a bit tired the two nights after returning home...but that was about it....

ilovetotravel29, <What's the deal with jet lag?>
You're lucky if it doesn't bother you, whatever the reason. I know it doesn't have to do with age because it has always been awful for me. It is from time change not only 'jet lag' as even daylight savings time screws me up.
...I just consider it a condition along the lines motion sickness, some people get suffer, some don't.

If you transfer through Heathrow within 24 hours of landing, you'll save £5 if traveling in economy, £10 if in business class, for air passenger duty not paid to HM govt. (£10 and £20 if going to a non-EU destination.)
If arriving on the overnight (as opposed to day flights which we much, much prefer) then we carry on that day. One less unpacking of bags and customs yoga. Plus I hate getting to and from LHR. If LGW (you didn't say) then Brighton or somewhere on the south coast is comparatively easy and enjoyable for battery recharging. However carrying on is still our preference.

Gardyloo:
How does this work? If I book 2 separate flights who's going to know I should pay a different tax on the second flight?
I am flying into LHR. If I don't hop on another flight that day, do you recommend I fly in and out of Gatwick or Stansted instead?
Ilove2travel/suze: In my youth I could handle losing a night's sleep. In my not-so-youth, well, I guess I'll find out.
