another day trip from Madrid

I have another day available for a day trip from Madrid. I already have Segovia/La Granja scheduled for 1 day. Any suggestions that is easy to reach by bus or train ? Toledo ? Avila ? Guadalupe ? thanks.

Sure.
You have to go to Toledo.

Others suggestion:
San Lorenzo de El Escorial (about 1 hour far by train)
Ávila (a little bit more, perhaps 2 hours)

My free day is a Monday. It seems many interesting places to go are closed on Mondays. I looked into El Escorial, that is closed on Mondays also. Which would be a better choice for 1 day trip from Madrid ?

Toledo and Avila are both great. On a Monday only - I might prefer Avila as its walls are spectacular any time - but in general I would say Toledo has most to see.

Try Alcala de Henares for Cervantes museum and a wonderful little town about 1hour by train. Also Aranjuez palace of Ferdinand and Isabella. AGain about 1 hour and a nice historic town. I think both have universities. Look up info in travel books if needed.

By far, Toledo was the most interesting and we've spent time in every place mentioned this far.

Toledo is amazing - beautiful, mysterious, and scenic.
