Another Clothing Question: Italy in late April-early May

Hi there,

I am going to be travelling to Italy in late April-early May and I am planning to visit Venice, Rome, the Tuscan region, and Florence.

I don't want to over pack and given that I am going to be visitng diverse areas, I am perplexed regarding which clothing items to include. I realize the obvious things (e.g. light weight pants, white blouse, scarf, comfortable leather shoes, nice belt) but I do have some questions. For instance, for anyone who has visited around this time, does the evening temperature require heavier clothing or will a light weight jacket do? Also, everyone loves black (including me) but is it still the thing to wear in Italy this time of the year; or are lighter colours more suitable? Are "capri" pants acceptable?

I know that this is not a problem of great significance but I do appreciate any advice.

Thanks.

Hi,
I was in Florence and Tuscany a couple of years ago in your exact time frame. A light jacket was fine for evenings and drizzly days. As everyone will tell you -- plan to layer. A tee and a sweater and a light jacket will get you through most weather. And like you, black always works for me. Just add a little color with a shirt or a scarf.
Don't know about Rome and Venice but I'm sure someone else can advise you.

I've been to Venice at that time of year and it was very pleasant and quite warm.
I found that a lightweight jacket was quite enough for evenings.

I have been to Italy several times during this period -it has usually been pleasant, but last year it poured for the entire week when we were in Tuscany - although locals told us it was unseasonal.

weatherbase.com is a good one to get an idea of the history of the weather. we were in portofino in early may and found everything from rain and chilly to sitting on the patio having dinner in perfect weather.
