Another clothes question

I am soon leaving for Rome & Paris. I am almost packed but I realized all of my clothes are skirts, dresses, and capris. I know all of the hype here over not wearing shorts but will I be fine without any? I have shorts to wear over my bathing suit and that's it.

Carmen Jul 30th, 2001 09:44 AM

You'll be fine, but you might be hot. We each took one pair of shorts on our trip, but we ended up wearing them every day. We were in London, Paris, Venice, Florence, and Rome, and we saw more people wearing shorts than wearing pants.

I don't know about Rome, but I know it has warmed up a lot in Paris since I was there a few weeks ago, but I would think you'd be fine in Paris without them. I don't usually wear shorts in Paris regardless of the weather, although I do in more resort and rural areas, so you can survive without them. I find skirts just as cool, anyway, and sometimes cooler. If you are worried about it, one pair of Bermuda-length walking shorts shouldn't take up that much room, throw them in, I would.

Dear dkny,
I used wear skirts in summer with closed-toed sandals or espadrilles & no hose. I find this quite cool. (If you haven't tried it, do.)
Best Wishes for a Great Trip,
BC

I'm with Book Chick - I never wear shorts because I find longer dresses/skirts with flat sandals a lot cooler. Dresses especially are great because there's nothing around your waist or between your thighs except the occasional breeze! (and an appropriate undergarment, or course ;))

I think you will be fine with your Capri's - especially if you wear them over your head!

dkny Jul 30th, 2001 10:19 AM

I agree that skirts and dresses are much cooler. I wasn't sure if there would be situations where I would be more comfy in shorts (having a picnic or if we take a short hiking trip perhaps).

Hiho, what the heck is your comment supposed to mean? Just being rude I would assume?

Hiho Jul 30th, 2001 10:30 AM

Dear Donna K. -

Previous posting on this thread seemed to be in disagreement on whether going without shorts would provide enough relief from the heat if there were some really hot days encountered. My posting was a compromise - the Capri's would be ok and would be cool enough if they were worn around the head, with the legs flowing up/out. This would leave plenty of air flowing around the lower extremities (otherwise known as legs). So...you assumption turns out to be incorrect..and you know what they say about people who assume too much.

Hiho,

Did I say or do something to offend you in some way?

hiho Jul 30th, 2001 03:14 PM

Dear Donna - No - not at all!!

XXX Jul 30th, 2001 03:25 PM

Donna -
Ignore HIho. he and Lionel and all their aliases are cluttering up this board, with sarcasm and salacious material. It will be hot but realize you are in a cosmopolitan city , shorts are great for resort areas, but skirts will be more comfortable and also more in keeping

Al Godon Jul 30th, 2001 03:28 PM

Bull roarski to the above.
Wear what makes you comfortable.
Paris is a grown up city.
The locals are used to seeing tourists in all kinds of wild regalia.
Besides, it can be darned hot on the streets of Paris when the temperature is 83 or so.

Just got back from Paris on July 20th. The 1st day was warm and sunny, then everyday it got progressively worse, cloudy and rain everyday. However it didn't ruin a thing for us. Most women were wearing capris, the remaining wore skirts or slacks. I did see some wearing shorts, but they were in the minority. I did bring one pair with us but I didn't feel comfortable enough to wear them. Also when it was cloudy, it was cool enough to have a cardigan sweater on during the day. I don't think you can go wrong with the capris, if it's warm or cool they look good. Have a good trip.
