another cell phone question

I have a Motorola V400 that I believe is a GSM phone, but it is not currently registered with any company. Assuming it is GSM, can I just buy a new SIM card + minutes in Europe and have it work that way?

My son just did that even though it was a US Cingular phone - I think the same model as you, his phone was not "Locked" so he could insert a local sim chip and it works just fine.

Adding- he is in Paris

Thanks - About how much should I expect to pay for a SIM card? Minutes?

The V400 is a GSM/GPRS quad-band (850/900/1800/1900) phone, so it will work anywhere in Europe by simply inserting a SIM, provided that the phone is not "locked" to a specific carrier.

You may be able to find a free unlocking site on the Web, but I don't know of any.

see mobal.com and riiing.com (three i's) for representative rates. Some single-country deals are cheaper (such as Virgin UK or Orange France).
