Peter, I don't think he will come back. From his other posts he has indicated that he has some odd reasons for posting on Fodor's and that he will be gone again by the end of August. He's a pia who regularly derails posts with his own bizarre agenda. I felt really sorry for one nice, new poster whose thread was ruined by improviser arguing with other posters.

I'm reading but have been refraining from commenting.
Peter, to be honest I could come up with a list of what I remember off the top of my head but it has been over so many years, perhaps 40 years worth since my first visit to Europe after leaving at age 7 (I was born in Scotland) and remembering gets a bit vague after that much time.
I remember my first return visit to Europe but I couldn't for example really tell you whether I have spent 15 periods of a week or more in Switzerland or 20. It's probably somewhere in there at a guess. I've even forgotten some of the places I stayed for a week or more in Switzerland. It goes back too many years, perhaps 35 since my first visit there.
So no, I don't plan to add my own list. I just want to see how many common places are on people's lists and how many smaller places.
If I say WHY I want to see the lists people come up with, then they will no doubt start arguing about my motivation. Leaving it as is just lets them post their list without any idea why they are posting.
Actually, that alone is worth thinking about.

Annhig, my best friend lives there and her home is my base for seeing a great deal in that part of the country and beyond.>>
Mme Perdue - I knew that there had to be some good reason to stay in Bromsgrove.

Improvisor - really, it isn't. your superior stance is just a PITA.

It's very central for some very good corners of the country. Ann's home is walking distance to the train, very quick to Worcester or Birmingham stations for the rest, the Worcester & Birmingham Canal for wonderful walks, Cotswolds a short drive away, not to mention a good local library. Sometimes the places not on the radar can be great locations for a longer stay.

MmePerdu - I could write almost the same about my home town of Coventry, [which isn't that far from Bromsgrove] but that's never going to be TOTP with your average tourist either.

Annhig, "average" being the operative word. I agree, but I thought this was a poll, our individual lists. I'm not suggesting everyone might choose a month in Bromsgrove. Or have I missed your point?

no, you haven't missed it at all, MMeP. I was initially surprised at your choice of Bromsgrove, just as someone who doesn't know Coventry might not see it as a good choice for an extended holdiay base, but once you had explained it, it made perfect sense.

Indeed. It comes with knowing a place better. After a while we need more than thatch.

We too do a lot of 5 night stays. We've stayed a full week only in Rome, Sorrento, and Nafplio (Greece). For both the Sorrento and Nafplio stay, we used the town as the base camp for numerous day trips to surrounding sites.
