Anniversary in Tuscany
My wife and I will be making our first trip to Italy in late April and early May of 2006 for our 25th anniversary. After a few days in Rome we would like to visit the wine country in Tuscany. We are particularly interested in Montalcino or Montepulciano as we especially like wines from this area. I have not seen much about lodging in this area, however. Suggestions?
We then want to head to a Tuscan beach for a few days. I need suggestions for this also.
We generally like 4 star or better hotels, but I am interested in any suggestions.

I would highly recommend Hotel Il Giglio. My DH and I just stayed there about a week and a half ago and loved it. The rooms are a medium size for europe, nicely furnished, lots of travertine (sp?) tiles, etc. but the best thing is the view. Montalcino is one of the highest if not the highest hill town so the views from the room are spectacular. I believe we had room #2 - very nice but I think all of the rooms with "panoramic view" as the hotel puts it are equally nice. Plus the price is great 85 euros for a double! Things are just more affordable in Tuscany than the cities, I guess. I'll try to post some of my trip pics of the room later, but what's on the website is really accurate.

Sorry for the slow response Jenny, my internet has been down for days, ugh. The driving and parking situation were, uh, a bit challenging. The hotel is in the city center which means a maze of small one way streets that were built long before cars came about. We had quite the adventure finding the hotel the first time, but once you find it once it actually isn't too bad. Definitely map it out before arriving.
In terms of parking the hotel has one 15 minute parking spot in front - pull up there, unload your suitcase and the staff will park the car for you. The tricky part is when you want to get the car again - the staff just give you the keys and let you go get it. The problem is they often parallel park it on impossibly steep hills. The first time we got the car out okay, but the second time it was on a really steep hill wedged between a pole and another car and we snapped the mirror off trying to get out (on the pole luckily, no damage to the other car) (DH has been driving manual cars since he was 16, I can only imagine someone not used to a manual trying to get it out!). So the next time we asked the staff really nicely if they would get the car for us and they did, you may just want to do this and save yourself the hassle. Good luck!

We stayed at La Saracina last year and it was perfect in every way. The owner is wonderful, the rooms are beautiful and very romantic. The bathrooms are as big as the large bedroom. They have a Pool, olive trees, fresh figs, spectacular views.... http://www.lasaracina.it/menu_eng.htm

Sorry I pressed post before I finished. As for the Tuscan beach...We never stayed at the Pellicano hotel but I recently read an article about it and was very impressed. The web site looks great for what ever that's worth. http://www.pellicanohotel.com/

Hello! My husband and I spent a week of our honeymoon in Montepulciano, and absolutely loved it. We stayed at the Politian apartments, and I highly recommend it (you can click on my name for a review). In early May he may be willing to rent it for part of a week. www.politian.com
