Anniversary in Salzburg - restaurant suggestions?
My husband and I will be in Salzburg from May 5-9, with May 6 being our 2nd anniversary. We are planning day trips to Berchtesgaden and Salzkammergut while we're there - haven't picked what days to do those. Any suggestions for a special place to go for supper, and/or an evening out? I have been to Salzburg before but was a cheap college student at the time - we have a bit more to spend now, and my husband's never been to Austria.
Thank you all! |
Go to Schriftskeller St Peter. Great food, they have been there since 800ad, upstairs is much more expensive but frequently comes with a concert. It is next to the St Peter Cemetery of Sound of Music fame (where they hid from the Nazis).

Hangar 7. Unique and excellent. (More specifically, Ikarus restaurant at Hangar 7)

Hi A,
What's your budget? |
Hi Ira,
We haven't really discussed yet, maybe $200? CAD, so probably 130-140 Euro. We could do more if we were convinced it was worth it. |
BTW I don't drink (don't like the taste), so my husband will be the only one getting wine, which lowers our dinner costs.
|
Any other recommendations? We will be celebrating my parents 50th anniversary while in Salzburg and looking for a special place. Budget is similar to abbynicole's and only one will have a glass of wine.
Thanks! |
I haven't been to Icarus, as suggested by BTilke, but I think I recall it as a very modern, avant garde sort of place. If you want to do something similar but stay in town rather than go out by the airport, check out Carpe Diem. Everything is served in savory cones--except the ice cream. Sort of like tapas in a cone. The concept is very interesting and the food itself was good.
So was the more standard dinner we had across the street (as in Getriedegasse, the main street of Salzburg) at the Blaue Gans, the Blue Goose. There are three places to dine—a bar with tall tables and a very modern vibe, the dining room where we ate with regular height tables in a vaulted ceiling room like an old beer cellar but with modern furnishings, and a cave downstairs which I never descended to see. We started with poached monkfish in an aspic of minestrone with delicate pesto flavor and tiny veggies. Light and sublime. Next came a linguini with duck, then apple sorbet followed by veal, beef cheeks and mashed potatoes and three desserts that I recall tasted good but that I’m ashamed to say have faded into a wine and champagne-induced haze. N.B. The account above is taken from our NYEve dinner at this place, but I think their regular offerings were on a par or better. It's a really swell restaurant. Modern but with a bow to the traditional. |
Julie, it's not just the setting that makes Ikarus so unique (it's not just another modern decor), it's also the food. Ikarus features a changing roster of renowned chefs from around the world, cooking their signature dishes and giving a special flare to the rest of the menu.
When we were there, the visiting chef was from the top restaurant in Sao Paolo, Brazil. In May, the guest chef is Norbert Kostner (the "Thairolean"), from the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. http://www.hangar-7.com/en/special-p...rbert-kostner/ A meal at Ikarus is definitely a special experience. |
Wow. What a concept. I tried to go there on our New Year Trip a couple of years ago but it was closed for the holidays. Now, knowing more about it, and having your rec (you put us into the Meinl on Graben best food of the trip that year), I've got to work it into another trip. Hmmmm.
