Annecy,France

Hi All,
I have looked several places on the web for the altitude of Annecy,France,is there anyone out there that can help?
Also any suggestions you can give me about a visit there would be great. Were going from Paris to Nice on the train, and thought Annecy would be a beautiful place to stop for 1 night on the way to Nice. Is 1 day enough? Thanks in advance. del

Can't help you with the altitude question, but it is certainly not that high up. We spent four nights there last summer, but spent most of our days doing day trips out. It is a pretty and charming town filled with flowers and quaint small shops and restaurants along a couple of canals in the "old town". It sits on a very pretty and scenic lake which you can easily take a boat trip to see. But there isn't a lot to do there, so I think a day will just make a nice diversion.

Annecy's altitude is 550m, or around 1800 feet.

I don't think one night is enough - it's a beautiful town on the shores of one of the most beautiful bodies of water anywhere. Good food, places to stroll, lots of life. Geneva's a short drive, the Alps are right here. Go and enjoy.

Annecy is a totally cool spot. Probably not worth more than a day but definitely worth a stop. I would rent a car, get a Michelin driving guide, head off into the mountains and stop at a local place for fondue and wine. Very romantic.

Thanks to the people who responded to my questions, you answered every one. Looks like we will love Annecy.
DEL

We stopped there for several days on our way down from Paris to Rome. It is a lovely, cool spot on a picturesque lake and in the French Alps. The town is very walkable and quite charming. One day to see this lovely town and as a break in your trip would be long enough.

I have to disagree about one thing - one day is not enough. We spent 4 nights in Annecy in July and wouldn't have wanted it to be less. We took one day to go up to Chamonix and the Aiguille du Midi (superb!), another day we drove down to lac du Bourget and up to the Molard Noir, then on to Abbaye de Hautcombe, completing the circuit at Aix les Bains (a long day but well worthwhile), on the third full day we explored the town and the eastern side of lac d'Annecy. Annecy is a lovely town and I would readily go back

Greg, I think you have misunderstood del's question. We did a plan similar to yours and used Annecy as a base for exploring other towns around it, but del was asking about just seeing Annecy or making a stop. As you have mentioned, apparently you really just explored Annecy itself in one day. Of course a longer stay is always nicer to get out and explore an area, but I'll stand by my original answer. One night is fine for a brief stop to get to see and explore the town of Annecy and break up the trip from Paris to Nice.

Annecy is a beautiful little town of about 50,000 people and lots of canals and lovely houses with flower boxes lining the canals. Since you will be visiting it on a "drive through" having driven the 536 km from Paris during the day and I presume planning to arise the next morning and be on your way to Nice, you wouldn't have much time there. Probably just a late afternoon and evening. Nonetheless you can see much of the compact old town in that time and I can't think of a lovelier place to stay on your journey. To make your stay even more relaxing you might consider stopping for the night in Talloires, 12 km from Annecy, a resort town on Lac D'Annecy after walking about Annecy to see the sights there. Talloires has several lovely hotels with excellent food. In fact the Annecy area is littered with Michelin stars including the 3 star Auberge de l'Eridan. If you want suggestions on hotels and gourmet food stops, I'll be happy to provide them. You've found a good place for your midway stop on your route. For sure, visit Annecy.

I have to disagree also. I spent a couple of days in Annecy and could have stayed one more. It's a charming town with charming people and yummy food! And I didn't explore any outlying areas.

Try to be there for the Sunday market - the booths line the pedestrian walks
beside the canals; colourful and charming! Annecy is delightful!

Yes, I prpbably did miss the point, but I stand by my view - we did spend quite a bit of each of those days in Annecy itself. Make it 2 nights!

So if del has at most one night to spare in this trip, you suggest they skip Annecy altogether? Three weeks would be nice, but if they can only spare one night, I say go for it. I still think that was the basic question.
