I didn't realize I needed to get tickets SO far in advance. Here are my choices, I'd like your help in deciding which option to take.

1) We can buy tickets that include the half hour family program in Dutch, which cost 14 euros as opposed to 9 - but they ARE available at convenient times during the day.
2) We can buy tickets at 8:40 in the evening. This will be late August, so it will likely by dark.
3) We can wait until we're there and wait in line, I'd appreciate knowing when the best time would be if this is the best option - we're there Sat - Mon at the very end of August. I'm thinking Monday might be the best bet, but maybe early Sunday?

Thanks in advance for your help. I should have done this MONTHS ago, I just thought a few months in advance would be plenty of time!

( I had a tour guide for the day and this is what happened...
our guide knew the ticket agent lady and bought us two tickets at about 8:25 Am.

then we went next door for a coffee and Dutch pastry.

When we came out at 9:02 AM , there was a block long line up , but we just walked in . )

The National Museum Card covers entry to the Anne Frank House so if going to just 2 or 4 other museums you can buy the year-long card that gives free entry to zillions of other museums and sights in Amsterdam and thrughout Holland - not sure how it works with timed entries though - at some museums card-holders abort the main line and get preferential entry but at the Frank place I do not know - worth asking and I'm asking here for myself when I return, like swallows do to Capistrano to lovely amazing awesome Amsterdam!

I didn't do the family program so don't know if that would be ideal for you or not. If that appeals, I would either choose this option or the evening time period. You could always go to dinner and then visit the museum. I don't think an evening visit would deter from your experience unless you think you will be too tired by then.

I would avoid waiting in line, if possible.

I would buy tickets online either the family program or the evening one. In late August sunset is around 830pm, and the museum is open to 10pm in July and August. Select the best time and get a timed ticket. Waiting in line to buy a ticket will mean less time you will spend elsewhere.

You still need a timed ticket if you have the museum card, otherwise it is stand in line for hours.

Personally I would go for the evening one. Whilst the sun sets at about 20.30 there is a good hour or more of twilight. Amsterdam is safe after dark anyway, so I can't see the problem.

Totally agree.. take evening slot.

waiting time last week mid-week was close to 3 hours.. so says a friend who waited it out.

Postscript - from the time I posted this yesterday, until I read this and went directly to the site to buy tickets - there were only tickets for OUR LAST NIGHT IN AMSTERDAM.

Now, as the site says, there's a possibility that they will release more tickets a week before, but at least we have something. Extra thank you's all around!
