I just tried the hot chocolate today at Starbuck's. It is very rich and I love chocolate. I could only drink 1/2 of the 6 oz. cup. I look forward to trying some at Angelina's this spring. Do other places like Cafe de Flore or Cafe Deux Magots compare to Angelina? WE will be staying in ST. GErmain area so just wondering.

ilovetulips,
I had hot chocolate a couple of times , late in the evening, at Cafe Deux Magots, which was right around the corner from our hotel.
I thought it quite good, not too sweet or heavy, which was good since it was right before going to bed

Zabars sells a hot chocolate made of Valrhona chocolate in its cafe. It's not that thick, though.
I happened to be in Starbucks today for the free tasting. The hot chocolate was not very hot at all. I had it a couple of weeks ago and paid for it, and that time it was good and hot. Personally, I liked it, but it is sweet.
I am sure neither Starbucks' nor Angelina's is on the French Women Don't Get Fat diet. ;-)

Thanks for the thread! I have never in all my years had hot chocolate at Angelina's. I did drag my DH there one year (he who didn't like chocolate), but it was way too packed. This May I will make a point of getting there! (Lipp or not)

Ilovetulips, I understand that Deux Magots' & Café de Flore's chocolat chauds are very much like Angélina's - but I haven't had the chance to compare & contrast yet!!
Maybe LVSue can do a tasting of all 3 & come back with her findings this May!!

I'm thinking of ordering the Mariebelle hot chocolate mix I learned about on this site. I've been craving an Angelina's-style hot chocolate for months now. If you've tried it - is either the Mariebelle Aztec Original or the Dark too sweet, compared to, say, Angelina's?

I have never had the pleasure of having Angelina's. I can say that I prefer the original Mariebelle over the Dark. I find the Dark too bitter. I am a sweet freak, so I may not be the person to comment on this, but I don't find the original too sweet at all. A friend of mine has commented that she feels like she needs to add sugar to it.

Just stopped at Starbucks for the new drink, Chantico. Very, very sweet - too much for me even though I love anything chocolate! I did enjoy the hot chocolate at Angelina's last October - but wished I hadn't finished it as it was almost too much. But it was fun to go there - glad I didn't miss it as I would have always wondered about it!

Hello fellow chocolate lovers,
I'm going to Paris for the first time next week with a girlfriend. Our time is very limited (3 days!) but I'm dying to try this decadent hot chocolate. Is it available in most cafes, or do you need to make a special trip to Anglelina's or one of the other places mentioned here?

I had the thick hot choc drink at Florians on St. Marks square in Venice. It wasn't too sweet but it was so rich I was woozy all afternoon and felt sort of sick.
Is Starbucks Chantico like this? I was thinking I could buy a cup and then dilute it at home with some hot milk or coffee.

SeaUrchin, if you are interested in trying the Starbucks Chantico, you should be able to ask them for a sample. I was in Starbucks on Thursday and asked a simple question about the Chantico and they offered a small sample. I found it to be too sweet and a little too gritty for me, so I'm glad I asked for a sample.
