Andalusia in summer
 

I am beginning to plan for a trip to Spain this coming summer. Unfortunately, because of my profession and vacation time available, the only time I can go for an extended time is in between mid July and mid August. I would love to visit the Andalusian coast, but would also want to see Seville and other historic places inland.

I am considering a condo or home rental somewhere close to the coast (Mijas? Cadiz? other suggestions?) with a rental car to do day trips.

Anybody with experience traveling in this part of Spain in the summer months? Is it so hot that it will be unbearable? I was in the Salamanca region last August and did not find it to be that bad, but I realize Andalusia is further south ...

In July and August it is hot indeed, and crowded. But you'll do if you didn't find it too bad in Salamanca.
Seville, Cordoba and Jerez are the big towns that you might like. If possible visit Ronda and Grazalema too. They are very intereting and beautiful small towns. Grazalema is my favourite in the middle of the Nature park of Grazalema, and this park is the best place in wester Andalusia that time of the year.
Sun has burnt the nature in July/August. Only Grazalema park and National park of Sierra Nevada (eastern part of Andalusia) are somewhat "fresh". Think about visiting Granada and Sierra Nevada. It takes some 3 hours by car from Seville to Granada (251 km).
Costa del Sol, southern coast of Andalusia, is not to my taste. I find it too touristic...

It's not that bad on the coast - but as soon as you go inland the daily highs are often more than 100 - often for days in a row. And the coast is really too dar away to do day trips to the major cities (Seveille, Cordoba and Granada) and really see anything, althouhg clost enough to see a couple of the white towns. If you rent a condo be sure that is ha real, American style AC and a good pool - since you will need both in the afternoons.

We've done 2 trips in the area in April and temps were already in the 80's and everyone who had it using AC and their pools.

Since your time is limited you will have to slow down the trip, plan on not doing much in the middle of the afternoons - and ether give up on the larger cities - or stay in them for a couple of days rather than daytripping from the coast.
