Mimi, I know you've mentioned McLaren's Paris before and I think it's so cool that you're not only familiar with it, but like it so much.

If I was ever exiled to Elba, or imprisoned on Sainte-Marguerite, it would be one of the ten CDs I'd take with me.

I love it because it covers much of the time of Kiki's Paris. When I was younger, I wore mostly Sonia Rykiel's clothes, and who doesn't like Juliette Greco and Miles Davis. At work, one of my associates was a handsome young black and I'd sing to him. 'You are black, I wore Black. There's so much covered in that one CD, From Francoiçe Hardy to Catherine Deneuve. It's a trip.

I have bought discs as souvenirs(occasionally 78s before they became pricey antiques), including several CDs of 20s/30s Parisian music hall stars (Lucienne Boyer, Chevalier, Mistinguett and so on) as well as Piaf (of course) and Reinhardt/Grappelli - and one of a swing jazz group I heard playing Hot Club-style in the Place des Vosges one glorious Sunday morning.

You can find CDs for the local nostalgia market in most places (somehow I have both 'Paris by night' and 'Buenos Aires by night', so there may be a worldwide series!); I found one of Zarah Leander in Berlin.

As a Londoner, I would go for 'Waterloo Sunset' by the Kinks, or if I felt nostalgia for a really miserable wet Sunday evening, Gerry Rafferty's 'Baker Street' (the best excuse for drowning your sorrows I know); but NEVER 'Maybe It's Becorse I'm a Londoner'....!

Oh, won't you stay....just a little bit longer....

We heard this song play on the last day, last hour, last minute of our 3-week tour of Europe (our first visit to Europe). As we got up to leave the Grasshopper in Amsterdam, heading to Centraal Station to take the train to the airport, this song came on just as we approached the door. You don't know how hard it was not to sit right down and stay....just a little bit longer.. Peace.

"Tell me why I don't like Mondays " (by the Boomtown Rats) - London

" Hot Stuff " (Donna Summer) - Zurich

Both because they had just been released that summer and were playing endlessly in those cities.

Guess we all have silicone chips inside our heads...

HI,

Fun question. "Babylon" by David Gray reminds me of London.

This question also reminds me of a funny incident: a couple years ago I was in a pizzeria in Orvieto, and I could hear bits of a song coming from the restaurant's speaker--it was the Dido song, "Thank You," but it wasn't. I realized it was that Eminem song that samples Dido, and I laughed--Eminem wasn't being played on the radio in the States so I'd never actually heard him--had to go all the way to Italy for that!

The Soul Cages album by Sting.

On our first Euro-trip together, Mrs. Go and I rented a car that had a tape player, but we neglected to bring tapes. So we went to a little CD/tape store in Verona. Their selection was quite terrible, but we found one title that might do in a pinch: the new Sting album.

Neither one of us was (or is) a big fan of his, but we ended up playing that one continuously for 12 days on that trip. So now, it's a tradition. We bring it along on every trip, because it sounds like traveling to us.

When I pack my bags for Scotland 6 days from now, The Soul Cages will be in my backpack. Along with about 15 CDs.

It will be interesting to drive along the remains of the Antonine Wall, listening to the words of "All This Time"...

Teachers told us, the Romans built this place
They built a wall and a temple at the edge of a garrison town.
They lived and they died. They prayed to their gods.
But their stone gods did not make a sound.
And their empire crumbled till all that was left
Were the stones some workmen found.

I'm with grandmere -- the only thing I have regretted in Paris is that I'm not there now.

Italy -- O Sole Mio [sorry]

Macedonia -- Makedonka Devojche [it's about how Macedonian "girls" afre more beautiful than any others!]

Austria -- Tales of the Vienna Woods

Leaving on a Jet Plane - reminds me of every trip I make to Germany for work, I always leave wondering when and/or if I'll get back there.

Anything by Dougie Maclean or Capercaillie for the Scottish highlands.

I agree with OReilly about older Clannad, although I've only been to Ireland in my dreams.

Ireland, for more than one reason (even though it was written about the US): U2's Where the Streets Have No Names

And for some reason, Elvis Costello's Veronica makes me think of London.

I'm sure I'd need to play Nessun Dorma in Tuscany.
