Ancona - How to get there?

I'm joining friends for a trip to Le Marche next June, and after the euphoria of discovering the unspoiled "new Tuscany" I've had a rude awakening in trying to figure out the best way to get there. From D.C. there seems to be no easy (or cheap!) route. The simplest seems to be flying Lufthansa through Munich, but I've read awfully tepid reviews of that airline. Does anyone have recommendations? Thanks!

I have no experience with Ancona, but I have flown Lufthansa and see no reason to take another airline if Lufthansa has the simplest route. I think all airlines have their good flights and bad ones. Mine on Lufthansa were fine, no better or worse than flights on other airlines.

If you can get to London Stansted, you can fly on to Ancona with Ryanair. I wouldn't fly with Ryanair, but I have a friend with a house near Ancona & she's actually never had a problem with her flights. I'd go with Lufthansa. BTW I hope you don't think Ancona itself is unspoiled.

If you can manage it, do consider what the other poster has said & fly wherever you can get the best deal, then transfer by Ryanair from Stansted (I have done this)or alitalia to Ancona. OR, Ancona is a major train crossroads and service is excellent there. The train from Rome to Ancona is a bit under 3 hours, straight shot, for example.

Ancona is a busy, bustling port, but we enjoyed our brief time there. And, if you've got a car, there are many little interesting areas near it to explore.

Thanks all! We're actually not staying in Ancona -- that's just the nearest airport.

I actually have British friends flying to Ancona from Stansted for this vacation, but I was nervous about making a connection there on my own steam. Also not sure how to fly to Stansted from DC, but it sounds like I can figure it out. And I'll keep my eye on those Lufthansa flights. . .
