I have a relative who lives in Rome, very close to the Domus Aurea, and I asked her whether it is open.

She emailed: "Last thing I heard it was not, in the ordinary course of events, but it was possible somehow to arrange tours. You'd find better info online, I'm afraid. Whenever I pass the gate is closed."

Don't know if it's helpful, but that's everything I know!

Thanks for the additional suggestions. Based on the feedback, I am making a few changes: skipping Boboli Gardens and adding Piazzale Michaelangelo; adding San Clemente before the Colosseum tour, moving back Hadrian's Villa to day 10 rather than trying to see it on the same day as Ostia; and seeing the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme. I also have a list of additional sites that we hope to see if we have any extra time.

I visited Domus Aurea on my last trip to Rome and loved it, but I haven't seen any indication that it's open.

There is an amazing amount of knowledge on this forum - you guys are great!
