An unexpected Fodorite gathering in Orvieto

I'm not surprised it happened. Il Sette Consoli had often been recommended here. So it was no accident that on Tuesday of this week on our day trip to Orvieto from Rome, we made a 2:00 lunch reservation for after our underground tour. The lunch was wonderful, but about 3:30 when there were only three tables of us left(all Americans), we started talking. Soon one person mentioned they were there because of Fodors. A woman at the next table said,"me too". And of course I chimed in in agreement. Soon we were comparing notes and screen names and realized we all recognized each other. Jackie from Boston, HopeHana from near Jacksonville, and me from Naples, Florida. Hope has promised to post a picture of all of us there.

Then last night in Rome, chatting with the people next to us at dinner, Lee had to tell them the story. Well, not surprisingly when he mentioned "Patrick", the woman (Martha from Houston) said, "You're Patrick? I've been reading your posts!"

Small world isn't it?

Too much fun!

All the work that goes into planning a GTG state side and you stumble into one.

Happened to me a few years ago at Le Petit Normand in Bayeux. Great fun, no?

It's a small world. I know ira pushes this restaurant, and we will probably go there during our September trip.

Well, how was it? What did you have? Did you have the house wine? How were the lunch prices?

How was the underground tour? How was it set up -- is it a self tour?

Looking forward to reading your trip report, especially about Montepulciano and all the wonderful wines.

To answer Budman, no we didn't do the house wine. We ordered a bottle of '93 Riserva Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Bosarelli for 18 euros -- an amazing wine and an unbelievable bargain.
Our food:
Lee-- carpaccio of tuna four different ways, a wonderful presentation, then grilled fillet of beef with "hot" beans, and a multi-chocolate dessert which everybody seemed to be having.
Patrick -- fettucine with pigeon, asparagus, and black truffle, followed by loin of rabbit roasted in white wine and herbs and served with an amazing combination of tiny cubes of potato cooked with sausage and black olives. Then a wonderful cheese plate with two marmalades. This was a meal made in heaven. Total cost was 107 euro, and worth every penny.

Barb, don't hold your breath, but relax. In Montepulciano now, and apartment 3 at al pogglio (sp?) is fantastic. We couldn't be happier. No car which is going to be different for us (we cancelled the idea of driving after our recent wreck in Wales). But this morning we walked about 10miles all up and down hills before our huge lunch. I had to catch up on emails, while Lee is sitting happily on our own balcony overhanging the gardens staring at the spectacular view over the Tuscan countryside. It's very special here.

Patrick, it sounds like you're in the midst of the perfect vacation!

Even though your brief report made me sigh a little in envy back here in Florida, I'm happy for you both. May the delight continue!

Yes, great to hear from you two enroute during your travels. Sounds like you've once again managed to carve out some wonderful experiences. Enjoy yourselves and tell us all the details when you return. Val and I are back from Croatia which enchanted us completely. Also spent time in Tuscany and in Orvieto. Unfortunately I failed to book Il Sette Consoli so all I could do was drool over the menu. I'd have picked the rabbit too.

Good to hear from you Patrick. Sorry to hear you had a wreck in Wales. Hope no one was hurt. Calamari was rear ended (in her MIL's car) in Italy, Florence I think. Stay safe and enjoy.

I just saw the pic from Jackie's post!! Cool! And you didn't even have to wear the Fodorites pin.

Beathchick: I"m embarrassed to say I don't recall. We were ordering our meal and bantering in French with the waiter, then talking to the kids in English, and this couple behind us leaned over and said something like, Wow! How do you switch back and forth between languages like that? And we explained we had a house in France and had spent time here for years and bla bla, and they said how did we end up in this restaurant, and we said our hotel recommended it, and they said they heard about on a travel board called Fodor's and my eyebrows went up and I said really? I post a lot on that board, and they said who are you and I said StCirq and they said Oh Gosh! And we talked some more during and after the meal. Very nice couple.

It was before registration, and I don't think they were regular posters, but at the time I recognized their screen name.

But that is so cool, StCirq, regardless! I have never accidentally run into a Fodorite ANYWHERE.

Patrick, when you have time, I would appreciate your thoughts on a question about Montepulciano. I see that you are there without a car. We plan to spend about a week there next year, either March or June, and I've been wondering if there is a reasonable way to get there without a car. We would spend a few days driving out into Tuscany and Umbria, but we really expect to spend most of the time in Montepulciano (or another suitable town in which to do a lot of walking, exploring and vegging out). If we can get there without a car, I would be prepared to travel to Siena or elsewhere to pick a car for 2 or 3 days that we would actually use it (possibly at the end of our stay).
So my question is whether you had difficulty getting there without a car (I understand the train station is away from town), and do you know if can you pick one up there if you need it.
Thanks and have a great continuing trip.

Patrick- Thanks so much for your recent message from Montepulciano. My husband and I have reserved apt. 3 for five days in September and are really looking forward to our time there. Your description made me even more anxious to be there. Do continue to enjoy you trip.

Patrick,

You are a popular person! We also met the couple from Jacksonville that you've met in Orvieto.

While in Rome, we were waiting for L'Orso 80 to open for dinner (restaurant that was recommended by Fodorites for its misto casa). We started to talk, and when I told her about Fodors message board, she then talked about how she met you(Patrick) in Orvieto. And another Fodorite.

Because I've read up many of your posts, I told her that maybe I'll somehow bump in to you while we're in Positano! or La Tagliata in Montepertuso - but, sad to say, it never happened.

Anyway, I'm sure you're enjoying your trip. We did!
