An example of the type of help Ben Haines provided

Just last night I topped an old post to which Ben had made a marvelous contribution. The post was asking about the cheapest places in the world to visit. Here is the great work he had done.

"You write on the Europe forum, so I shall reply for Europe. Over the years I have listed countries of Europe, starting with the cheapest. I used my own experience, notes from correspondents on the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree, and the site for Town Twinning Europe.

Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia and Belorus are hard to list here. In almost every other country accommodation costs are in line with other day-to-day expenses but not in Russia and other states of the former Soviet Union.
Ukraine comes lowest in this order of tourist costs if you rent an apartment for a week, or can use one of the few two-star hotels.

Ukraine
Moldova
Bulgaria
Slovakia
Romania
Albania
Latvia
Lithuania
Estonia
Serbia
Poland
(excluding Krakow)
Czech Republic
(excluding Prague)
Hungary
Macedonia
Croatia
Slovenia
Portugal
Southern Spain
Krakow
Turkey
Southern Italy
Greece
Prague
Northern Italy
Netherlands
Sweden
Finland
France
Austria
Ireland
Norway
Switzerland
Denmark
Ireland
Britain

I shall welcome any reader's improvement."

What a nice man!

And, many think his rankings are pretty accurate.

I remember this post! I've referred back to it many times when thinking about costs and budget for Europe!

Just one of many reasons Ben will be missed on this board....

Fodor's should create a Fodor's Hall of Fame and only passed on members should be eligible - Ben would be my first nomination.

Ben, I noticed that Germany is not included on your list.

We have traveled there several times recently, as well as the UK, and found prices for food and hotels in Germany to be much lower than the UK. They are at least in line with those of Austria.

I never have a problem finding a nice, centrally located 3* hotel in Germany for 80 Euro or less (approx US $105), whereas in the UK, the same hotels are 80 GBP and up (over $150). You can get a great meal in Germany for under 10 Euro or the equivalent of around US $13.

Of course, this is based only on my own experiences.
