An email exchange idea!
 

I have an email idea that every Fodorite who likes to exchange files should do. I often want to email to people or exchange files but I don't want to post my personal email on the forum which wpuld soon be followed by a load of spam in my mailbox. Its simple, identify yourself.

Sign up for a free Hotmail or Yahoo account and use your Fodors screen name followed by the word Fodors. Here is my new emailfor exchange--

[email protected]

End each post with your email signature!

Maribel can you send me your famous Seville and Barcelona files?

Richardab - You can click on your "profile" and add your new email address to post next to your screen name as mine does.

He's saying that he doesn't want to do that. In essence your [email protected] would be a "secret" e-mail address. I don'r mind sharing my e-mail address, and I doubt that [email protected] is available.

Fodors COULD set up a forwarding mail server at hardly any cost (methinks), and pass on from [email protected] to the e-mail address we registered with them... hint... hint...

Sorry Rex - I took it that he wanted to " End each post with your email signature". This could be easily accomplished by posting your yahoo,msn, hotmail etc. address. I don't understand your reference to a "secret" address.

I thought that he was saying that if enough people signed up for a yahoo address or hotmail address that is [email protected] or [email protected], it would be n "in-crowd" way to mail each other, without having to make that e-mail address spread all over the place.

But now I see he actually signed up for [email protected] - - so I would sign up for [email protected]

So now I agree, why not just display this or any other e-mail address per one's profile?

As I already do.

It can't be secret or no one can write to it. This isn't some secret club from grade school. I think Fodors has quite enough to do without running mailbox referral services for people.

Anybody who wants to get email from anyone who sees their post on here is perfectly capable of getting one of those free email accts on many places and putting it in their post. Yahoo's is very good because they have a good spam filter and few ads, unlike mail.com.

Richard - I have sent Maribel's files to you at your new email address. Let me know if you get them.

Just add the word "fodor" to the end of your Travel
Talk screen name and sign up for a Yahoo or Hotmail
account.

I did not want to use my regular email for 2
reasons...

1. I don't want to get a lot any more spam in my
regular mailbox.

2. I don't want any of you crazies to find out my
regular email.

I also dodn't realize that you can get your email addy
posted if you click the little box in your profile.

So once again..

1. Add "fodor" to the end of your regular Travel talk
email.

2. Sign up for a Yahoo or Hotmail acct. (free)

3. Change your email addy in your Fodors PROFILE and
click on the box which allows it to be displayed in
your profile.

OK? (see email next to my profile?)

Richard - I don't think people are making it difficult.

It's just that many of us already have email addresses that we use here. (And for many, it's not our regular email address). Why create a new one that has "fodors" at the end of it? Anyone can email me at the address above, even though it doesn't contain "fodors". ;)

I've had my [email protected] displayed next to my profile for over a year now. When I added it to my Fodor's profile I selected that I did not want any mailings.

I think it's interesting that I've not received one spam e-mail at this address.

By the way indytravel is not my "real" e-mail address. We won't discuss the amount of spam it receives. :-)

Sounds like a good idea to me to have an account with fodors in the name.

At least this way it would be easier to distinguish the spam from genuine e-mails from other fodorides. I'm sure the spammers won't make the effort to open up new accounts with fodors in their name....or at least I'd like to think so :)

Maybe richardab isn't ticked off; just poked your ribs a little because you said anyone can write to you...?

On another board I have seen people who were asking for an email post heir address as;

john.doe(remove this)@xxx.net

Maybe this fools address scrapers.

On my football team's (unofficial) message board, we have a supporter who is an IT expert,who always tells us about the latest viruses etc.
He always advises writing your address without using @ or .com

ie - angel_UKathotmaildotcom

Whatever the things that trawl websites looking for addresses are called,they don't seem to be able to recognise them when they are written like this.

I signed-up on Yahoo also.
