I'm Dutch and I would never tell a tourist to go to Febo. Would you recommend a Dutch visitor to NYC that they should go to KFC?
Order some bitterballen with your beer to get a taste for Dutch snacks.

See when New York City long ago had similar automats tourists from all over America, including my family, sought them out for the novelty - FEBO and other snack bars of the same ilk - are about the only place nowadays I've ever seen automats - a neat experience and the bami and nasi goreng are an exotic snack for Americans at least.
and yes for someone who had never been Stateside before I'd say pop into a KFC to see what real Americans usually eat - the real American cuisine - Dutch folk mob many FEBOS - I wonder why - why are there so many FEBOs?
Nothing to be embarrased about like the Red Light District IMO.

Andrew, found your comment on Leuven interesting. Several of my ancestors came from Leuven, so I was planning a day trip. But, if it's advisable to overnight there, even better. Any comments from those who know Leuven would be welcome.

Few phrases are are as irritating or as useless as "real Americans" or "real any nationality." It implies that only the people who are poorer or less sophisticated are real. Who is anyone to claim whose life is real or not?
Every country has people of different income levels, education, tastes, and interests. All make that country what is for better or worse.
There can a better fried chicken stand down the block where the real real people eat. Where it is better and prepared by real real people, not phony teenagers following directions from the home office.

I didn't spend a night in Leuven - only did a day trip from Antwerp. I enjoyed Leuven enough that I wished afterward I'd done it the other way around, but I can't say for sure what the place is like at night.

Regardless of the merits or otherwise of Febo, as I said why not spend more time in the Netherlands and see more of the country. Amsterdam is just a small part, and there is much more to the country than Amsterdam.

ditto to what hetismij2 says - Dutch regional towns are really Dutch! Not at all like cosmopolitan Amsterdam where English in the tourist cengter seems the daily tongue.
Haarlem, right on Amsterdam's door step, Utrecht, Delft, Ledien - they all and many others are nice nice towns with good shopping streets and little of the flotsam and jetson found in Amsterdam - and also they have lots of FEBOs and the ilk!
