Amsterdam - where to stay?
 

Hello! I am looking at various Airbnb's in Amsterdam. Any suggestions on which area of Amsterdam to stay in are much appreciated! In the city? By the sea? How is the public transportation? Is 4 days enough time? Thank you so much! Alexis

The sea is a bit far from Amsterdam, I'd stay in the city.

Public transport is excellent in the whole country, but you can walk to most sites in the city centre.

4 days is enough for a first visit, you may even do a daytrip or 2 depending on your interests. The Netherlands is much more than Amsterdam.

AirBnB is controversial in Amsterdam and you could find yourself thrown out if the owner has exceded their allowed days of rental. Consider an alterntaive. Hotels are expensive I know but there are also hostels.
The sea is a long way from Amsterdam.

It depends on what you want to do whether 4 days is enough. As BDKR says the netherlands is much more than Amsterdam or Amsterdam plus most of the normal day trips from Amsterdam.
If you want to visit the Anne Frankhuis you must book online as soon as you possibly can. You also must book the van Gogh muesum online.

Why airbnb specifically? Short term rentals are seriously regulated in Amsterdam. You might be better off staying in a (legal) hotel or Bed & Breakfast. What is your budget? When are you traveling?

Don't do AirBnB in Amsterdam, please.

Airbnb is legal in Amsterdam, so if you want to use one of those go for it. The idea that you are having more 'impact' than someone in a hotel is bollocks. If the issue is total number of tourists in the city, then where you stay is irrelevant. If it's that you are 'taking away' potential long term housing, this is also untrue, as the current laws limit hosts to 30 days rental max in one year, so clearly, no-one is going to take a property off the long -term market for short term holiday rental. If it's that you are potentially disturbing locals with your holiday coming and goings/noise etc, then that is probably less of a concern in Amsterdam than many other cities, because there are a lot of hotels already converted from townhouses in residential districts, so you are having no more impact than anyone staying at one of those.

If you do decide for whatever reason, it's not for you, then I recommend Motel One or Monet Garden, both on Valkenburgerstraat just out of the centre near Waterlooplein. You are about 3 mins walk from a tram stop and 5 mins from the Metro.

In the case of AirBnB vs the precise make-up of the Dutch public housing system, your statement is beside the reality that has been created in Amsterdam because of short let "match makers" like AirBnB. That's why the crackdowns are happening. Also, your "30 day limit" argument is beside the point, as the AirBnB platform itself allows hosts to operate numerous accounts and there are no checks whether these are in fact "revamped" listings that ran their 30-day course. Or they can run their hobby-hotels across AirBnB and booking.com and maximize occupancy beyond 30 days that way. There is now sufficient evidence that short lets, and AirBnB in particular, are pushing out residents and the whole situation has sent the Amsterdam property market into overdrive. Residents of the most impacted areas are organizing quite a bit of direct action already. The municipal Ombudsman had a temporary apartment in the RLD just to see what that was like, and it was mainly due to his report, that the municipality chose to take action. That statement that bother by tourists is "OK in a city like Amsterdam" is simply ludicrous. You think people who live in the city centre don't have children who need to sleep? Or need to sleep themselves? That this has become somewhat of a shambles is beside the point: it's clear that in many neighbourhoods, something has got to give and that a number of 18m visitors yearly to a city that counts less than 1M inhabitants just isn't sustainable.

Sorry - but it isn't bollocks. A hotel is (generally) in a commercial area. The majority of airbnbs are in residential neighborhoods and the guests can be a huge annoyance/bother to the local residents.

A bad development re airbnb where I live are them being rented for house parties and huge crowds of mostly young people running amok -- in the last four months there have been been one murder and many serious injuries at out of control parties in airbnbs.

Millions of people use it successfully and several Fodorites do have properties listed with them. But Airbnb is really out of control and more and more cities are going to try to put limits on them.

I would stay in a hotel. I would pick someplace in the canal rings or near Vondelpark or Leidseplein.

Homeland also has serviced apartments in the "Van Rijn" building, also at the former Navy yard.
