Amsterdam--where to stay??
 

Just started researching Amsterdam for Sept. 2015, been looking at hotels & B&B's.

Anyone have a suggestion on places to stay or just the most convenient area to stay in to be able to walk to the major museums, etc?
Budget up to 250 Euros

I realize that I have a lot of research to do but any help to get started will be much appreciated.

The area around Museum Plein, the Concertgebouw and Vondel Park is central to museums and is a clean calm safe area - something you cannot say about every area in Amsterdam - there are many nice hotels in this area, well served by trams or not a long walk from practically any major tourist site.

September is conference time in Amsterdam. The IBC is a huge annual conference and exhibition which fills hotels. Check your dates in case you coincide with it. Prices are higher than normal, and rooms scarce. They tend to be booked during the IBC for the following year.

I really enjoyed my stay at the Seven Bridges Hotel. Each room is different and interesting. Big Dutch breakfast brought to the room. I loved the location (I walked everywhere) and there are lots of restaurants on a street about a block away. I stayed there a few years ago and the Italian restaurant on the next corner was outstanding. It was small, so be sure to make a reservation. I hope it's still there.

Ditto Zoecat..yesterday I also recommened it..outstanding, great area on the quiet Regulier Canal...close walk almost everywhere..Rijks Museum very close. Here's my recommendaton for another OP...as I said rates have gone up, but 250 should get you in. Stu

I liked the area that PalenQ mentioned, although some might say it wasn't as convenient as dead center. But it was fine, I did walk or take the tram everywhere. I stayed fairly near the Rijksmuseum.

I think I stayed in the BW Apollo Museumhotel, although it has been redecorated since I was there, but a great location.

It looks like the IBC conference is Sept. 10-15 so we'll plan around it.

danon----The Estherea Hotel looks just lovely. Very pricy in Sept. but might fit the bill.

Unknowingly, we planned to be in Amsterdam during the IBC conference last September! We were fortunate to find availability at the Tulipa B&B in Leidseplein. It is a charming B&B that was comfortable & well-located. We discovered that we were very central, no need to take trams to various sights around the city. We walked everywhere!

We stayed at the Ambassade in September, and I did not want to leave (which is something I don't often feel about any lodging other than my own house!)

The Vondelpark area is lovely and the prices are somewhat lower; but one of the most special things about Amsterdam is its canals, and staying in a hotel on the canal was worth every penny to me. (Plus, we got a great deal on the Ambassade by booking directly through the hotel about 6 weeks ahead of our arrival).

We loved Seven Bridges, too. We stayed in Room 5--huge, beautiful, full of antiques. Breakfast was great and the hosts are lovely.

I also stayed at the Toren and really liked it. The somewhat dramatic color scheme may not be for everyone, though.

We just stayed at the Prinsenhuis apts in June. Just blocks from the Rijks and ate at some great restaurants recommended by Edwin, the owner. Loved being on the canal and watching the boats go by.

LucieV, The Ambassade is one of my very favorite hotels anywhere :-)

We stayed on a houseboat in Amsterdam a few years ago. It was a fun, interesting experience. I got the idea from a trip report here and rented from frederic's bike rentals http://www.frederic.nl/en/ He has fewer rentals now.

Be careful with houseboats and be sure they are recommended by a good source - some have problems with plumbing and sewage I've read but if it sounds good this is a great unique place to stay.

Well, PalenQ, I am certainly not a good source! We loved our 4 nights on the boat but, we are boaters and expected a boat....not a hotel! Frederic and staff were great but our experience was 3 years ago. Staying on a canal was just a unique experience.

Judy - you were the type of source I was talking about - a good one. I read an article on Amsterdam's daunting problem with house boats, some of which lack really good sewage connections, old plumbing, etc - not nearly all of course but you do want to do some venting I believe before booking.
