Have you been to Paris before?.... If not, I would say neither. A week just scratches the surface. Why those two cities? There are other closer options.

Amsterdam has better museums than Zurich.

Amsterdam is lovely...would be my choice..about 4 hours by train.
Brussels , less then 2 hours. Not sure about Zurich.

And I agree... If you have to give up two days in Paris(a sin, but there 's a lot of sinners out there) ... I would also go to Amsterdam.

I do like Amsterdam... But keep an open mind, and agenda. The first time we went to Paris, I planned some trips. In a week, we never had time. Paris is my happy place... So I can spend weeks there and never leave. If you want two different experiences (albeit still in France), I might consider Nice. I wrote a pretty detailed blog about Nice and the surrounding hillside towns at worldinbetween.wordpress.com. I also wrote about Paris, but from a different perspective. I only suggest it because it gives you a non big city second option (and it is great).

Whatever you decide... You can not go wrong.

Amsterdam is way better than Zurich. But then so is Strasbourg, Luxembourg, Brugges, Trier, Reims, I could go on....
