We were in Amsterdam in April, 2015, and rode the tram to a stop near the three museums. There is the large park-like area and we just walked to a building near where we got off the tram, on the edge of the green space. We bought timed tickets for the same day, about an hour out from when we purchased them and then walked over to the Van Gogh Museum.
To buy the tickets, we stood in line for maybe 10 minutes. The line at the Van Gogh Museum for people without specific times stamped on their tickets was very long. We were able to get in the much shorter line and waited about 5 minutes before being allowed in.
I don't remember the tram stop or exactly where the ticket building was but everything seemed very easy to negotiate. The ticket building was near places to eat (outside) and other booths to purchase souvenirs. Sorry I don't have more exact details but hope this helps anyway.
